Viktor Hovland Wins BMW Championship
Viktor Hovland shot a course record 61 on Sunday to come from behind to win the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields, just outside of Chicago. Scottie Scheffler and Matthew Fitzpatrick led heading into the final round at -11. Brian Harman sat at -10, while Max Homa was at -8. Viktor Hovland and Rory Mcllroy rounded out the Top 5 at -8.
Record Round for the Winner
Hovland recorded ten birdies on his round and only shot a bogey on hole 7. He finished up with a three on both 17 and 18 to lead the way. As he went into the clubhouse, Scottie Scheffler carded a bogey on the 17th hole.
Rounding Out the Top 5 at Olympia Fields
Scottie Scheffler and Matthew Fitzpatrick both held solid rounds on Sunday, as they shot a -66, but Hovland and his course record overtook it. Scheffler and Fitzpatrick tied for second place as they both missed out on a birdie chance but hit par on the 18th hole. Rory McIlroy also shot a 66 on the final day, but his weekend was set back a little by the play in the first two days of the event. Brian Harman and Max Homa tied for fifth place.
The Final Countdown
The final event of the season is this coming weekend. East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, will be the home. Rory McIlroy is looking to repeat as champion, as he took down Sung-Jae Im and Scottie Scheffler a season ago. The previous season Patrick Cantlay took down Jon Rahm. Keep in mind each player will begin with a different score to start the event.
There is an advantage to leading the FedEx Cup Championship. Those at the top FedEx Cup standings will get a better start than those at the bottom of the Top 30. This gives those that have played well all season long an advantage in the final event.
Scottie Scheffler will start with the pole position in the event. He will open up Thursday at -10. His playing partner Viktor Hovland moved from 7th to 2nd. That gives Hovland a chance to start Atlanta at -8. Rory Mcllroy remained in the third spot and will open up at -7. Jon Rahm, who did not play well the last two weekends, started in the top spot but dropped to fourth. He will start the event at -6.
Lucas Glover rounds out the Top 5 after his red-hot month of golfing. Glover will open up at -5. Max Homa, Patrick Cantlay, Brian Harman, Wyndham Clark, and Matthew Fitzpatrick are 6th-10th and will get the chance to start the event at -4.
Those Golfers 11th through 15th will start the event -3, while 16th through 20 are -2. Guys that are 21st – 25th will start at -1, and 26th through 30th will start the event even.
Big Time Prize Pool for Final Event
The total Prize Pool of the Tour Championship is $75M. The winner of the event will win $18M. Second place comes away with $6.5M, while third through fifth come away with $5M, $4M, and $3M, respectively. Sixth through ten place also finished with $1M or more as well. The rest of the $75M is given out to those 11th through 30th, with 30th place receiving $500K.
Thursday morning will start the Tour Championship at East Lake. Tee times for the event will come out later this week. Rory Mcllroy was the winner a season ago, and it was his third time winning the event. Patrick Cantlay won the event in 2021 and will start at 7th overall. Dustin Johnson was the winner in 2020.
