Ohio Casino Revenue Declines

March was a great month for the casino industry in the state of Ohio, but that was not the case in April. The Ohio Casino Control Commission has announced the revenue totals for April, and those numbers were extremely disappointing.

Taxable revenue from the four casinos in Ohio came in at $83.5 million, and the states was hoping to cash in on the momentum from March. That number represented at 12% decrease from the March numbers, but it was hark to keep that pace going.

In-person sports betting is not included in the taxable casino revenue numbers, even though the properties are bringing in some revenue that way. Ohio is a massive online sports betting market, although that’s another industry that has slowed down in a major way.

It has been a strange year so far for the casino industry in Ohio as the revenue has been bouncing all around. Ohio is not a state that has legalized online casinos, and that means that players have to travel to a physical location in order to get in on the action.

Hollywood Columbus Leading the Way

Revenue from slot machines continues to lead the way as nearly 74% of the revenue total came from that style of action. This is not the only way that the OCCC breaks down the revenue report, as it also shows the actual casino properties that are seeing the most action.

Most of the betting action continues to be done at the Hollywood Columbus property, but there are a couple of other casinos in the mix as well. Hollywood Columbus posted a taxable revenue of $23.1 million in April, but that was a drop of more than 9% from March.

The JACK Cleveland Casino went over $21 million in revenue last month, but it also had the biggest drop from the March numbers. The Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati was in third place with $19.7 million in revenue, and it was an extremely tight race to finish in third.

The Hollywood Toledo is the other casino property in the state, and it also went over $19 million in taxable revenue last month. When comparing the April revenue to the previous year, only the two Hollywood properties posted a positive increase.

Money on the Table

The casino properties in the state are comfortable with online casino gaming still being illegal, but this state is leaving millions on the table each month. Ohio borders the state of Michigan, and that is a state where the online casino industry is bringing in tons of money.

Lawmakers in the state of Ohio have had some discussions about passing a bill to make that industry legal, but nothing has happened yet. It wouldn’t be a hard process for online casinos to launch in Ohio as most of the sportsbooks could simply add a new option.

Like other states, if online casino gaming were to pass in the state of Ohio, it would have to be done by the voters during a November election.
