Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert was the first player in the National Basketball Association to test positive for the coronavirus, and it prompted the league to suspend play immediately. It was unclear how or when Gobert contracted the virus, but the league didn’t want to take any chances.
The very next day, it was confirmed that his teammate, Donovan Mitchell, had tested positive for the disease as well. All members of the team were tested, but Mitchell was the only other player to test positive.
Detroit Pistons center Christian Wood was the next NBA player to test positive for the coronavirus. His positive test came back a few days after the league suspended operations, and he was the only member of the Pistons team that tested positive.
The next news story that broke was an announcement that four members of the Brooklyn Nets had tested positive for the coronavirus. While the team didn’t announce the names of the players that received a positive test, All-Star forward Kevin Durant confirmed that he was one of the players.
Durant announced on his Instagram and told fans that he was expected to make a full recovery.
League Directive
The NBA sent out a memo to all of their teams, urging the organizations to clean their facilities and monitor team officials for symptoms of the coronavirus. It was reported on March 19 that three members of the Philadelphia 76ers organization had tested positive for the virus.
The team did not announce the names of the people that had tested positive, and it was unclear whether or not any players had been affected.
Later that same day, the league announced that three more players had tested positive for the virus.
Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart was the only player to confirm the positive test. Smart posted a tweet that confirmed that he had the disease and that he was in recovery.
Two members of the Los Angeles Lakers also tested positive for the coronavirus, but neither the team nor the league has yet to announce the names of the players affected.
When the NBA initially suspended their league, players and teams were urging NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to wait at least 30 days before another decision was made. After a slew of positive tests has come up in recent weeks, it appears that the NBA season will likely be suspended until the middle of May at the earliest.
Several other NBA teams have tested all of their players and anyone else in their traveling party. It is important to note that all of the tests have been paid for by the NBA teams, and they have been done by an outside organization.
All players that have tested positive for the coronavirus are expected to make a full recovery, and the league has not announced that any player has been hospitalized with the disease.
The NBA has seen the most positive tests to their players, although it has affected other professional sports leagues as well.
