Winston Says Goodbye To Tampa; Where To Next?

Jameis Winston is officially a free agent after the Buccaneers and Tom Brady agreed to a two-year deal on Friday.

Winston took to Twitter on Friday to say, “It’s been a great 5 seasons as a Buccaneer. All love and respect. I love Tampa and I look forward to seeing y’all again in February. #SBLV #2020Vision #Dream Forever.”

Winston’s future is still unknown, as there have been no rumors of any teams expressing much interest as of yet. The 2013 Heisman Trophy winner led the NFL in passing in 2019 with 5,109 yards on another league high of 626 pass attempts.

Winston also led the NFL in interceptions with 30. He’s the first NFL quarterback to ever throw 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in the same season.

Buccaneers center Ryan Jensen had some kind words to say about his friend and now former teammate. Jensen told ESPN, “Battling with Jameis the last two years has been some of the most fun I’ve had playing football, not only did we become teammates but also good friends over the last two years.

“This business is always tough and just that — a business. I’m excited to see where Jameis lands. With that, I’m excited to go to battle with Tom and excited to see what he will bring to the organization.”

Landing Spots

Winston’s options are limited, but there are some very good teams in need of a quarterback. Teams rumored to land Winston were the Chargers and Patriots, but the Chargers announced they would be moving forward with Tyrod Taylor.

The Patriots have yet to express any interest in Winston either, but I could see Bill Belichick taking him under his wing and turning transitioning him from a turnover machine to a potential Super Bowl champion.

Rumors making their way around the league say Winston could potentially be the backup to Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh. With Big Ben only getting older and his body becoming more fragile as days go by, this would be a perfect spot for Winston.

Roethlisberger is very injury-prone but knows the Steelers like the back of his hand. If Winston does land with the Steelers, I think he’ll eventually take over the starting job for Roethlisberger, whether it be due to lack of performance or injury.

The Jaguars were another potential landing spot for Winston, but they officially announced they would be moving forward with Gardner Minshew as their starter.

Winston is among three former No. 1 overall draft picks waiting to join a new team. Winston joins Cam Newton and Jadeveon Clowney on this list.

The future is blurry for Winston, but it does make you wonder why nobody has picked him up, considering he threw for more than 5,000 yards last season. If I had to make a prediction, I’d say he gets picked up by a team in need of a backup quarterback. He’ll get his chance to shine again, but most are predicting Winston not to be a starter this season.
