Monday Night Baseball: Angels @ Mariners

The Los Angeles Angels visit Safeco Field to take on the Seattle Mariners. First pitch will be at 9:10 p.m. central time. The Angels are 37-29, good enough for third place in the American League West Division. The Mariners have fought their way to the top of that same division, with a record of 41-24. This matchup could prove to be important later in the season in determining who makes the postseason.

Andrew Heaney will be on the mound for Los Angeles. He is 3-4 so far this year, with a 3.12 Earned Run Average. Heaney will look to even his record and bring his ERA closer to 3. For Seattle, Wade LeBlanc will get the starting nod. The lefty is 1-0 so far this season, with 2.94 ERA. Los Angeles is narrowly favored in this game: at -114.

Los Angeles Angels

The Angels will be without Andrelton Simmons, who is out with an ankle sprain after he slipped and fell in the dugout on Tuesday before a game against Kansas City. Since he was hitting a great .330/.399/.460, he will be a big void to fill against one of the best teams in baseball.

However, per usual, Mike Trout has been in the conversation of who the best player in the world is. He is hitting .299 so far this year, while driving in 39 runs. He has also hit 19 home runs. Perhaps his most impressive stat is the fact that he gets on base over 43% of the time. Plate discipline is what separates good hitters from great hitters, and Trout is certainly the latter. Also, LeBlanc is a lefty, so a great right handed hitter like Trout could look to pounce on an early fastball if he sees one

Seattle Mariners

As a team, Seattle has been hitting the cover off of the ball, with an incredible 10 men hitting .250 or above (Not including the suspended Robinson Cano). Jean Segura has been leading the way, with a .337 average. He has also driven in 40 runs. Denard Span is hitting .316, and has driven in 31. He has also added 6 home runs. Kyle Seager has hit .429 in his 7 times facing Heaney. Some combination of these three will need to step up in this game. While Seattle is the better team on paper, you can never count out the Angels.

Mariners Take Down Angels

There’s no doubting that the Angels are a great team. However, the loss of Simmons will prove to be a huge one. With the Mariners missing one of their best hitters as well (Cano), this game will be a year of depth. Seattle simply has more depth in their lineup. I think that for the Angels to win, it would take a huge performance from Trout, something that he is certainly capable of providing. This being said, I would still bet on the Mariners to take this game. Bet on the Seattle Mariners @ -108.
