The St. Louis Cardinals are back in the playoff race as they begin an eight-game homestand on Tuesday night against the Milwaukee Brewers. On the road, the Brewers are favored with a moneyline of -160 while the Cardinals have a moneyline of +135. The game also has an over/under of 7 runs.
Not too long ago, the Cardinals looked finished, but thanks to a six-game winning streak, they are now five games over .500 and in the playoff picture. The problem is they are still 10 games behind the Brewers in the NL Central. But St. Louis is just four games out of a Wild Card spot, giving the Cards hope.
Meanwhile, the Brew Crew is holding steady at the top of the NL Central. They’ve won six of their last seven games to help keep the Cardinals and the Cincinnati Reds at a safe distance. Milwaukee currently holds a 7.5-game lead over Cincinnati at the top of the division and is tied with the Tampa Bay Rays for the third-best record in the majors.
Feeling the Burn
Milwaukee Brewers ace Corbin Burnes will get the start for the Brew Crew on Tuesday. Burnes is surely a part of the Cy Young conversation with a 7-4 record and a 2.23 ERA after 20 starts. He had one bad start in late July but has allowed one run or less in seven of his last eight starts.
Of course, the St. Louis offense has found a lot more consistency over the last week and a half. The Cardinals have scored at least four runs in 11 straight games while averaging over six runs per game during their six-game winning streak. This has been one of the few stretches this year that Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt are clicking at the same time while Dylan Carlson is providing plenty of depth.
The Wright Stuff
The St. Louis Cardinals will also feel good about extending their winning streak with Adam Wainwright getting the start on Tuesday. The 39-year-old is 11-6 with a 3.27 ERA over 23 starts this season. He’s coming off a complete-game two-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates last week and has thrown five straight quality starts, covering at least seven innings while giving up three runs or less.
Of course, Wainwright will be dealing with a Milwaukee lineup that’s averaging 5.6 runs per game over its last nine games. The Brewers have turned things around offensively behind mid-season acquisitions Willy Adames and Eduardo Escobar. Luis Urias, Avisail Garcia, and Rowdy Tellez have also been productive throughout August, adding plenty of depth to the Milwaukee lineup despite Christian Yelich continuing to have a down season.

With the Cardinals listed as underdogs despite winning six in a row, St. Louis offers a lot of value in this matchup. While Burnes and the Brewers are favored for a reason, Wainwright has a chance to level the playing field with Burnes on the mound.
