Hovland Wins FedEx Cup Championship

We have a new champion of the Tour Championship. Viktor Hovland, who started his streak of red-hot play last week in Olympia Fields, won the Tour Championship with a score of -27. Hovland shot a -7, 63 on the final day to hold off Xander Schauffele. Schaufelle was solid on the final day as well, with a 62.

Hovland launched to second for starting position after winning last week. That moved him to -8 to start the weekend. Scottie Scheffler started at -10, but his +3 on Saturday basically knocked him out of contention, starting Sunday nine strokes off the lead and tied for fifth place.

Collin Morikawa started Saturday tied with Hovland at -16, but also had a poor Saturday, as he went +3 and ended up seven back at the end of the day.

The 25-year-old from Norway played his College Golf at Oklahoma State. Earlier in the season, he contended at both the Masters and PGA Championship. He tied for 7th at the Masters and was two strokes back of Brooks Koepka at the PGA Championship.

Hovland picked up a win in June at the Memorial Tournament, and then, of course, his 61 at Olympia Fields elevated him to the win at the BMW. This was his 6th overall PGA Tournament win, as he first won the Puerto Rico Open back in 2020.

Rest of the Golfers

The runner-up for Schauffele topped off an incredible season for the 29-year-old. The former San Diego State golfer did not win an event in 2023 but finished in the Top 10 ten times. In his career, he has made 137 of 160 cuts and been a runner-up 11 times.

Rory Mcllroy was not able to repeat as champion, but despite reports of a back injury before the tournament started, he finished with a 65 on the final day. That launched him to 4th place and a fantastic 2023 season. Rory carded five birdies in his final seven holes.

Rounding out the Top 5 for the FedEx Cup are Wyndham Clark at -16, Rory Mcllroy at -14, and Patrick Cantlay at -13. Scottie Scheffler, who started the event at -10 as the top seed, finished the tournament at -11 and in a tie for sixth place.

Prize Pool

The win for Hovland brought him an $18M prize. The total prize pool for the event was just shy of $58M. Second place – Xander Schauffele picked up $6.5M, while Clark’s third-place finish garnered him $5M, Mcllroy $4M, and Cantlay $3M.

Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth were a couple of guys that struggled on their weekend. Rahm was in the Top 10 heading into Sunday and shot a +4, 74 on Sunday to drop down to a tie for 18th place. Spieth was pretty poor all weekend, heading into Sunday at even. Spieth birdied hole 17 and finished +1 for the day and for the tournament.

Rahm’s tied for 18th finish garnered him $680,000, while Spieth picked up $530,000 for his 27th place finish.
