Once again, despite another weather delay – the St. Jude FedEx Classic wrapped up on Sunday with Lucas Glover coming away as the winner in a playoff. The delay was an hour and 36 minutes, which never saw any rain. There certainly was thunder and some wind that came through, but then made the second half of the day on the golf course very hot and stick for the golfers.
The playoff was between Glover and Patrick Cantlay. Cantlay got into the playoff with a 64 on Sunday. Glover started the 18th hole tied with Cantlay and had a putt from 22 feet, six inches away, that fell just a bit short. He tapped in the par put to send it to a playoff. The two golfers then went back to 18 for a playoff.
Heading into the final round on Sunday, Lucas Glover held the lead at -14 after a -4 on Saturday. He led Taylor Moore by a single stroke and Tommy Fleetwood by two strokes. After that, Max Homa and Jordan Speith were three back to head into the Top 5.
Playoff Short and Sweet
Once in the playoff, Cantlay started with a drive in the water to set up Glover for a great drive right down the middle of the fairway. Glover got to within 23 feet for a birdie shot. He was unable to make it but left Cantlay a chance from nearly the same spot. Cantlay fell a bit short, and Glover came away the winner.
Glover won last week at the Wyndham Championship as well. Before that, he was cut at the 3MM Open but finished T4, T6, and 5th in the previous three events. Glover is no doubt playing some of the best golf in the world. He also moved up into the Top 5, as he started the week at 49th.
Cantlay has not won an event this season, but he has finished in the Top 10 nine times this season. He moved from 13th to 8th in the standings.
Leaderboard at Memphis
Rory Mcllroy and Tommy Fleetwood tied for third place, while Taylor Moore finished 5th place alone. Corey Conners, Adam Schenk, Cam Davis, Sungjae Im, Russell Henley, Jordan Spieth, and Max Homa all tied for 6th place.
Fleetwood and Moore were the big winners in the Fed Ex Cup standings, as Moore moved from 25th to 14th and Fleetwood moved from 26th to 10th.
What’s Next?
Next up on the PGA Tour is the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields Country Club in Illinois. Olympia Fields Country Club is just 25 miles south of Chicago. The North Course is the course for the event. This is for the Top 50 golfers in the world, and once again, a no-cut event.
Patrick Cantlay has won this event the past two seasons, with 2021 in Caves Valley, Maryland, and 2022 in Wilmington, Delaware. The last time this event was held at Olympia Fields, Jon Rahm won on the North Course over Dustin Johnson.
Hideki Matsuyama and Cam Davis were two guys that played their way into the Top 50, who were on the outside looking in. Davis moved up 17 spots from 62nd to 45th, while Matsuyama was 57th and will start the BMW at 4th.
The two guys that fell out of the Top 50 were Mackenzie Hughes and Nick Hardy. Hughes started 47th and fell to 51st, while Hardy was 50th and finished up at 52. Patrick Rodgers was the last to make it in, at 50th, despite dropping seven spots.
Then, the following weekend, the golfers will head to East Lake Golf Course in Atlanta to finish up with the TOUR Championship. That’s the Top 30 golfers in the world. Lucas Glover, Sungjae Im, and Jordan Spieth made their way into the Top 30 with their performances this week.
Glover was 49th coming into the event and is now 5th. Speith was 31st and now 26th, while Im was 32nd and now 28th. Kurk Kityama, Denny McCarthy, and Seamus Powers were the three that got knocked out of the Top 30 with one event left.
