Brian Harman Wins 2023 Open Championship

There is a new champion at the Open Championship. Brian Harman joins the list of first-time champions at the Open Championship. The last time player won the championship multiple times was Ernie Els back in 2012. The South African won the Open in 2012.

Harman is the 31st golfer from the United States to win the award and the 46th time an American was the winner.

The weather at Royal Liverpool was dreadful to start the day but fortunately got a little better as the day went by. The course played a great course, but it was not able to slow Brian Harman down, as he was the winner after Day 2 and Day 3.

Harman shot a 67 in his first round and then went low with a -6, 65 on Friday. Saturday, Harman maintained his lead with a 69 before finishing Sunday with a 70 to win by six strokes.

Harman, 36 years old, has been on the PGA Tour since the 2009 season. He has four wins on the Tour after playing his college Golf at the University of Georgia.

His last win came in 2018 when he won the QBE Shootout along with Patton Kizzire. Before that, he won the Wells Fargo Championship individually back in 2017 over Dustin Johnson and Pat Perez.

Harman’s best result in a major tournament before this was in 2017 when he tied for 2nd at the US Open. Last season, Harman finished in a tie for 6th at the Open Championship. Earlier this season, Harman finished tied for 43rd at the US Open.

Rounding Out the Top 10

Sepp Straka, Tom Kim, Jason Day, and Jon Rahm all tied for second. Straka carded a bogey on the 18th to drop from solo second into a three-way tie. Kim started slow, with an ankle injury, and then turned in a 67 on the final day.

Day, who started the tournament with a 72, went 67, 69 69. Rahm shot a birdie on 18 to move into a second-place tie. Emiliano Grillo and Rory Mcllroy finished tied for 6th with their -6 weekend. Shubhankar Sharma and Cameron Young finished tied for 8th place with -5.

Local favorites Matthew Jordan and Tommy Fleetwood both finished in the Top 10 with a T9 finish. Jordan finished with a 70, while Fleetwood went with a 72 on the final day. Max Homa also tied for 10th.

What’s Next?

This was the final major tournament of the 2023 PGA Tour season. Next on the schedule will be the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina.

Following that, the FedEx St. Jude Championship, BMW Championship, and Tour Championship will wrap up in the month of August.

The win for Harman pushed him up 12 spots in the FedEx standings, and he will now be in the Top 10 at #6. The Top 6 remain the same, with Rahm, Scheffler, Mcllroy, Homa, and Clark. Straka is another guy that took advantage of this week as he moved from #21 to #15. Jason Day is another guy moving up, as he started at 15th and is projected to be 11th.

The other two guys that took big jumps this week; Tom Kim from 19 to 13 and Emilano Grillo from 28 to 23. Keep in mind the Top 30 make the Tour Championship.
