Stephen Chidwick is Still the Leader for 2018 POY

Global Poker Index is very active and they publish weekly lists with all the players that were the most active and had the most victories in the period. They also publish lists for longer periods such as the players who are the best of all time but also the player of the year lists. The algorithm for calculating POY takes into account several different parameters in order to calculate the GPI POY Score.

According to that score, Stephen Chidwick is still in the first place with 3691.67. However, the second player who is right behind him is Justin Bonomo with only 31 points less – 3660. The third place is taken currently by Jake Schindler who has almost 90 points less than Bonomo, 3569.71 – to be precise.

What is interesting is that these three players dominate the leaderboard for a long time. The same places were taken by those three in a list that they published a month ago, which means that not a lot has changed since then. In fact, Chidwick has managed to remain in the first place of this list for seven straight weeks and he is not planning on leaving his comfortable spot any time soon.

However, among these top three players, only Schindler managed to actually gain points in comparison to the last month. He had a great win in 2018 Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open High Roller where the buy-in was $25,500 and he managed to top the field of 123 entries and win a sum of $800,758.

However, that does not mean that Chidwick and Bonomo were inactive during that period. One would consider that odd since the two of them had a great streak. The problem is with the way how this list is calculated. Namely, only the 13 best results are taken into account when the people in the Global Poker Index make the lists.

That means that Chidwick was indeed active but his cashes were not enough to make it into his top 13 cashes, which means that no points were added for him. He was active in the European Poker Tour Barcelona though and did pretty well.

David Peters is in the fourth place and it is EPT Barcelona cashes that helped him jump up. The fifth place is currently occupied by Adrian Mateos and he is also there due to his great performance in his home country – Spain.

Another player whose performance in EPT Barcelona made him jump into the top 10 list is Alex Foxen who is now at the sixth place of the Player of the Year list proposed by Global Poker Index.

At the moment, the seventh place is occupied by Shaun Deeb, and Michael Soyza is on the eighth place. The last two places on this list are reserved for Anthony Zinno and Joe McKeehen.

There is still time left, but it seems that POY 2018 is certainly going to be either Chidwick or Bonomo.
