Simon Charette Wins 2012 WSOP Event #23

After three days of tough competition, Event #23, the $3,000 No Limit Hold’em Six-Handed tournament of the World Series of Poker has concluded. The event saw 924 players register to compete and it was Simon Charette who outlasted the field to earn his first ever WSOP gold bracelet.

When Day 3 began, just 18 players returned to the felt and a tough field of competitors still remained. Such players as Bertrand Grospellier, Andrew Lichtenberger, Eugene Katchalov, Scott Montgomery and Freddy Deeb. Game play would start off quickly and very soon six players would be eliminated.

Play would soon be down to ten players and Freddy Deeb would be the one to go out in 10th. Andrew Lichtenberger would bubble in the event at the hands of Artem Metalidi. The event then moved to the main stage at the Pavilion and the final seven players would then come together to finish out the tournament.

The first to go would be Scott Montgomery who would try for a flush draw but come up empty. Next would be Grospellier who went all in with pocket 7s only to be knocked out by Luis Rodriguez Cruz’s A-K. At this point, game play slowed considerably. Everyone was pretty even in chips and no big hands were in play. At this time as well, Simon Charette was able to become aggressive and then push himself to a larger chip stack.

Fifth place would go to Foster Hays and this occurred just after the dinner break. Next out would be Eddie Blumenthal. Eddie held A-Q and was called by Charette who held pocket aces. Eddie would get nothing and was out in fourth place.

Next up would be Luis Rodriguez Cruz.  Cruz doubled up once three way play began but he eventually be knocked out when his pocket sixes came up against Charette’s A-8. Heads up play would then begin but it would be very short. After just a few hands, Metalidi would be down in chips and he would show all in on A-2 preflop. Charette would call with pocket 6s and the 9-K-J-8-J on the table would not help Metalidi’s hand and he would be out in second place, leaving Charette with his first gold bracelet.
