Event #24 of the World Series of Poker has concluded after four days of play and it was Joe Cassidy who earned the win at the $5,000 Omaha Hi-Lo Split 8-or-Better event. The tournament saw 256 players competing and once Cassidy and Nguyen made it to heads up play, the battle was on!
Many top players in the industry competed in the event including Phil Ivey, who narrowly missed his ninth WSOP bracelet. Cassidy and Nguyen would return on Day 4, June 14th, to begin heads up play. Cassidy would have a large chip lead coming in to heads up play. Cassidy held 3 million chips to Nguyen’s 845,000. However, Nguyen was not ready to give up and he would take the first hand, cutting away at Cassidy’s lead.
Nguyen continued to add chips to his stack and Cassidy began to become frustrated. By the third level of play, Nguyen almost had 2 million chips but Cassidy turned up the heat and he would then begin to pick Nguyen apart.
Cassidy would earn several small pots which would put Nguyen with just a few bets left and then Cassidy would then take him out. The final hand would see Cassidy raising on the button and Nguyen re-raised all in for a total of 200,000. Cassidy called and they showed their hands.
Cassidy held A-K-5-2 while Nguyen held J-8-5-2. The flop fell A-Q-8 which gave Cassidy the top pair. A Jack on the turn gave Nguyen the leading pair but Cassidy would pick up a broadway draw and a 10 on the river would seal the deal. Cassidy would win the tournament and earn his first ever WSOP gold bracelet.
