Interesting Poker Stories in 2020

The year 2020 wasn’t a good one. It’s was a year filled with all kinds of lockdowns and shutdowns and tens of millions of cases of Covid-19, a disease that made plenty of non-essential businesses put a stop to their operations.  Live poker basically ceased to exist for a couple of months, but the good news is that technology allowed us to play the popular game online. This made online poker platforms much more popular as live poker players had no options to play the game the way they prefer.  Despite being a dark age for poker, there were a couple of interesting moments that happened this year that many people didn’t pay enough attention to. We decided to share some of these wholesome stories in this article.

Nothing Can Kill The Godfather of Poker

Doyle Brunson didn’t want to take a chance with coronavirus, so he decided to self-quarantine as soon as the pandemic started. However, he wrote that he had been robbed at gunpoint five times, stabbed, and managed to beat cancer three times. On top of that, Brunson survived three car wrecks. He is a living legend, so he didn’t want something as trivial as the Corona virus to be the cause of his death.

King’s Resort All-Time Money List

Every poker room has an all-time money list, and King’s Resort in Rozvadov, the center of European poker, keeps its list up to date. The most successful player in the European casino is Dominik Nitsche, who managed to earn more than $5.6 million.

Global Poker Award Winners

The Global Poker Awards took place in March 2020 for the second time, and some of the people who manage to receive such an important accolade were Joey Ingram, Jamie Kerstetter, and Stephen Chidwick. There was even a ceremony that paid tribute to poker players, industry workers, and media.

Hellmuth Sells His Vegas Home

Hellmuth is the best WSOP player with 15 gold bracelets. He was often the face of Las Vegas and the WSOP, but then he decided to sell his Vegas home. What’s interesting about it is that he actually tweeted about it. He was offering the property for $430,000.

High Stakes Poker Returns

High Stakes Poker was a popular show that aired almost a decade ago and contributed to the popularity of the card game. Ten years later, High Stakes Poker is back, and the producer is Mori Eskandani, a member of the Poker Hall of Fame.  The original hosts, AJ Benza and Gabe Kaplan, will return to their commenting booths. The show is recorded at the PokerGO Studio at ARIA Resorts & Casino.

Hopefully, there will be much better news when it comes to poker in 2021. All that is left is hope for a brighter future. If all goes well, we could hope to return to normal poker activities by the summer of 2021 and have an opportunity to watch live WSOP.  Happy New Year, and may it be better than 2020!
