We didn’t have the usual World Series of Poker festival in Rio this year as almost all poker rooms were closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the WSOP did hold an online version of the festival in the summer, attracting thousands of players from all over the world.
Just over a month ago, the WSOP officials decided to proceed with the real WSOP tournament, which had a hybrid format. Players were able to play online, but the ones who reached the final table actually had to travel to a predetermined poker room and play live poker, facing other players.
The entire tournament was actually divided into two separate competitions — the US and the world tournaments. The non-US players who made it to the final table traveled to Rozvadov in the Czech Republic, which is home to a popular casino called King’s Casino. It features one of the biggest poker rooms in Europe, and the players had an opportunity to decide on the winner of the international WSOP competition.
In the end, it was an Argentinian lawyer who managed to win a gold bracelet and top the event, earning approximately $1.5 million. All of this concluded more than two weeks ago. Since then, Salas has been on standby, waiting for the US competition to end so that he can go to the US and play a heads-up match with the American winner.
Hebert Wins US WSOP Main Event
After about four hours of intense poker action, a player called Joseph Hebert managed to top the Main Event, winning a total of $1,553,256 and denying Ron Jenkins a title. Jenkins had to settle for the consolation prize of $1,002,340.
Hebert devoted the victory to his mother, Linda, who passed away a couple of months ago. He shared his emotional last texts with his mother, explaining to her that he would like to win a gold bracelet and receiving nothing but support from Linda, who passed away shortly after that. Therefore, Hebert was more than determined to win the bracelet, which he did, becoming an instant poker icon.
Hebert vs. Salas — What to Expect?
The original plan was that Hebert and Salas should meet on December 30 and play a heads-up match to determine the ultimate champion of the 2020 World Series of Poker Main Event.
In other words, this year, however bad, was supposed to finish with the big finale. However, Covid-19 once again interfered and caused the finale to be postponed. Namely, Salas is unable to enter the US due to strict pandemic rules. Even though Salas was negative, he was denied entrance to the US at the moment and will be able to enter any time now. The new date for the heads-up match is set to January 3, 2021. Hopefully, there will not be any more delays, and we’ll be able to see the ultimate champion of the 2020 WSOP Main Event very soon.
