The state of California has been on the radar for some time now when it comes to online poker but no legislation has yet to pass. The problem in California is that Indian Tribes are having a difficult time coming to terms with specifics of what they would like to see happen with online gambling. However, despite this setback, the Poker Players Alliance believes that the state of California will pass an online poker bill in early 2014.
The Executive Director of the Poker Players Alliance, John Pappas, recently conducted an interview with Becky Liggero, of Calvin Ayre. Pappas stated in the interview that he expects legislation to pass in the state by next year. Pappas reported that around a dozen key tribes are in agreement with the idea of online poker in the state and they only need to determine the specifics of a bill to then move forward with legislation.
Pappas stated: “I would be very surprised if there wasn’t a bill that went through the full process by the end of January middle of February in 2014 in California. The PPA also believes that New York and Pennsylvania will also offer online poker options in the near future. Pappas stated that New York legislators are very interested in online poker and if the state moves forward with considerations, then the PPA will begin to push efforts to get a bill passed.
Pappas also discussed the fact that the PPA supports poker as a game of skill but this is not the primary strategy the group is using to get federal legislation passed. Pappas stated: “I don’t want it confused that this is the way we believe we are going to get regulation and licensing in the US. I don’t go and talk to lawmakers and talk about poker being a game of skill.”
Consumer protection and state revenue potential are the factors that the PPA considers essential to having poker licensed in the states. These key points are being used regularly in both state houses as well as on the federal level to try and pass legislation.
