A sign and a retaining wall are what is remaining in the Moulin Rouge casino on western Las Vegas. The sign partly forms the Neon Museum Las Vegas exhibit. However, things will change soon after Trypto Business Solutions, a local tech firm, disclosed that it will spend $2 billion rebuilding the iconic casino and redeveloping the Westside of Las Vegas.
The firm’s management made the announcement in a meeting with local media. Howie Palmer, Trypto Chief Operating Officer, stated that the project will take more than $1 billion. He added that its huge budget prompted him to appear in the meeting, and he invests in people, not in buildings or things.
The executive often focuses on something once he gets a purpose of performing a certain task. Besides, he rarely changes his decisions.
Moulin Rouge was Las Vegas’ first casino hotel to integrate in a period of segregation. Some casinos and hotels in the country banned Black patrons at that time.
The Moulin Rouge Development’s Predecessor
Trypto Business Solutions’ effort to redevelop the Moulin Rouge is the second effort to be made in the last six years. The tech firm held a huge groundbreaking ceremony in 2016 for the casino’s rebuilding, but it lacked enough funds to implement its plan.
Another Australian-based firm purchased the casino in 2020, intending to rebuild it. Unfortunately, the lot is empty to date.
Trypto wants to spend some money regaining the land’s ownership and suing the Australian firm. If the plan succeeds, the company will construct a 200-room casino and hotel together with its partners. Even so, it won’t be the city’s only ongoing casino development as the Clark County Zoning Commission reviewed and approved a new casino’s plans on Harmon Avenue and Las Vegas Blvd.
How Moulin Rogue’s Glory Waned in the Past
Las Vegas was segregated like many other United States cities. Many Black residents and business owners relocated their enterprises to the Westside as segregation increased on The Strip, and formed another strip along Jackson Avenue.
The Moulin Rouge hotel and casino emerged after the Westside’s rapid development as a flagship property for integration and entertainment. It launched in 1955 as Las Vegas’ only racially integrated casino. Unfortunately, the property operated for six months before it closed.
It later had a historical moment in 1960 when local leaders met and agreed to desegregate The Strip and downtown Vegas. The casino has had many downs and ups since 1960, including enduring several rebuilding attempts, purpose changes, and fires.
The National Register of Historic Places and the City of Las Vegas Historic Property Register added the casino in 1992. Yet, Las Vegas demolished it in 2010 and 2011 due to safety concerns.
The Casino’s Reconstruction Project’s Impact on the Black Community
The rebuilding project will play a key role in revitalizing the black community. It is part of the city’s “HUNDRED Plan” initiative. Besides, it will honor Moulin Rouge site’s history as the new development will create a unique Moulin Rouge landmark.
