The World Series of Poker has officially started, with the traditional employee event kicking off yesterday. The $565 Casino Employees event has finished day one with 731 players competing. For this year, the event is a bit different, having a single re-entry. A faster structure has been added with 110 players to be paid once the tournament finishes up. 23 players now remain in the first event of the WSOP, with game play to resume at noon today. The champion will be determined tonight with the first bracelet for the 2016 WSOP to be awarded.
Earlier this morning, the Colossus II tournament kicked off with a $565 buy-in and two starting flights taking place over the next three days. Players have the option to buy-in repeatedly, if they have been eliminated previously. Essentially, a player can buy-in six times, trying to stay in the competition. Multiple buy-ins by an estimated 30,000 players competing, as expected by the WSOP in Nevada, could result in a massive amount of prize money. A total of $7 million in guaranteed prize money is up for grabs with $1 million set for first place.
In 2015, the Colossus event debuted, seeing 22,374 player entries. This was the largest WSOP tournament to ever take place with an estimated 14,000 unique entries. It will be interesting to see if the estimated 30,000 entries for this year will be reached and just how much prize money will be up for grabs.
Today and tomorrow consists of just the Colossus II while Saturday will see the start of Event #3 on the schedule, the $10,000 Seven Card Stud Championship. Sunday will feature Event #4 and #5, a $1,000 Top Up Turbo No Limit Hold’em event and a $1,500 Dealers Choice 6-Handed event respectively.
The 2016 World Series of Poker is just getting started and we will stay on top of the major highlights, including the Colossus II, the Main Event and more!
