Women’s World Cup Preview: England vs. Sweden

The Women’s World Cup will conclude this weekend with a pair of matches. The third-place match will take place on Saturday, and it will feature England vs. Sweden in what should be a terrific matchup. Both of these teams suffered heartbreaking one-goal losses in the semifinals and will want to end this tournament with a win.

Sweden has actually lost a pair of matches so far in this tournament, with one of them coming against the United States in the group stage. The Swedish team fell short in a 1-0 semifinal loss against the Netherlands to be in this game. England nearly pulled off a stunning upset over the United States in their semifinal match but fell short with a 2-1 defeat. England went unscathed through the group stage and has had a great tournament. Sweden is the underdog at +400 while England checks in at -165.

Sweden Just Doesn’t Allow Goals

The team from Sweden hasn’t done much scoring so far in the Women’s World Cup, but their defense and goaltending have been terrific. Sweden has allowed just five goals total during this run and gave up just one goal in extra time in the semifinal loss. Goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl is one of the best in the world and has made 14 saves so far in this tournament. Sweden plays a very solid defensive game, and they likely won’t give up more than one goal in this match.

Playing defense is great, but at some point, Sweden is going to have to come up with some offense. This team has scored just 10 goals so far in the tournament, and they don’t have a ton of scoring depth. Kosovare Asllani and Stina Blackstenius lead the team with two goals apiece and will need to be great in this match to give their team a chance to win.

England Confident

England was supposed to get run over in the semifinal match against the United States, but that’s not what happened. England played an incredibly smart game and actually had a penalty kick attempt to tie the game late in the contest. This team also played terrific defense against the United States, and they know how to take care of the ball. Goalkeeper Karen Bardsley has allowed just one goal while making 14 saves so far in this tournament.

England has one of the best players in the world on their side, and she has been tremendous throughout this tournament run. Ellen White has scored six goals to lead the England team, and she will be watched closely by Sweden. Steph Houghton missed the penalty kick against the United States, but she is extremely talented as well. England has scored goals throughout this tournament and can do it again.

England Wins Third-Place Match

This should be one of the best soccer matches of the entire tournament, and these teams are extremely similar. Neither of them has been easy to score on in the World Cup, but they also haven’t done much scoring themselves. Sweden will keep this game close, but a late goal from England will be the difference.
