Women’s World Cup Preview: United States vs. the Netherlands

The 2019 Women’s World Cup Final is set for Sunday, and the United States will be huge favorites in this match. The United States is the defending Women’s World Cup champion, and they will be taking on a country making its first-ever appearance in the title game. The Netherlands came into this tournament with a ton of momentum and has used that momentum to power to the title match.

The United States outscored its opponents by a combined total of 18-0 in the group stage, but things have tightened up for them in the knockout round. Team USA has earned three straight 2-1 victories to reach the finals, but they have been challenged throughout. The Netherlands also went undefeated in the group stage, and they have been dominant of late. The Dutch team hasn’t allowed a goal in each of their last two games. The United States is -275 to win the Women’s World Cup, while the Netherlands checks in at +385.

Rapinoe Back in Lineup For United States

The United States will have one of its best players back on the field in the title match after missing the semifinal win. Forward Megan Rapinoe was out of the lineup with a hamstring injury but will be back in this game. Rapinoe is second on Team USA with five goals so far in World Cup play, and she takes almost all of the penalty kicks for the team. There is a good chance that Rapinoe will do something great in this game.

Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher had been largely untested throughout the first five games for Team USA, but that wasn’t the case in the semifinals. Naeher came up with a crucial save on a late penalty kick to keep the United States in the lead. Much of the conversation around the USWNT is about their offense, but they know how to defend as well.

The Dutch are Young and Hungry

The Netherlands might be one of the youngest teams in the field, but their coaches will tell you that’s a good thing. There are just two players over the age of 30 on the Dutch roster, and their players are hungry to prove they belong on the game’s biggest stage. The Netherlands has knocked off plenty of favorites already in this tournament, and they won’t be intimidated by taking on the United States.

The Dutch team doesn’t play a very aggressive style, but they do have a pair of extremely talented forwards. Vivianne Miedema leads the team with three goals, and Lieke Martens has chipped in with a pair. The Netherlands wants to win games with its defense, but they know that at some point they are going to have to score. Look for these two forwards to try and find holes in the United States defense to get some shots on net.

United States Wins Second Straight World Cup

The Netherlands is a very worthy opponent, but their excellent run is going to come to an end on Sunday. The United States came into this tournament as the favorite, and they have lived up to the hype. The USWNT just has too many weapons, and they are going to prevail in this game. Bet the United States -275 over the Netherlands in the Women’s World Cup Final.
