Wednesday Night Baseball: White Sox @ Yankees

The White Sox visit the Bronx to finish their series off with the New York Yankees. First pitch will be at 6:05 pm central. Game one of the series saw Michael Kopech and some timely hitting push the White Sox past the Yankees. In game 2, the Sox again jumped out in front after a fair amount of the game going scoreless. The Yankees mounted a comeback, however, and took game 2. This game will serve as the rubber match.

The White Sox are virtually out of the picture for the playoffs but have been surging lately. Their record stands at 52-80, but have won 10 of their last 14, not to mention 4 in a row before their disappointing loss last night. Their record puts them in fourth place currently in the American League Central division.

They are one game behind the Tigers, who have been in a freefall and were the last White Sox victims. They will be pushing for a respectable finish within their division, which could end up being second place, depending on how the Twins fare for the rest of the season. The Yankees, however, have problems of their own, despite their impressive 84-48 record.

The team that once rivaled Boston as the best team in the division is now on the outside looking in, at six and a half games out (And that is only because they barely snuck past the White Sox last night). They seem to have the AL Wild Card wrapped up, but they would definitely like to avoid the pressure of a one-game playoff. That would also likely pit them against the Oakland A’s who have been hot lately. The Yankees are heavily favored in this matchup: at -255.

Pitching Matchup

Both starting pitchers have been bouncing back lately. Chicago starter Reynaldo Lopez had some disappointing outings earlier in the year but bounced back with a great start against the Tigers on Friday. He has also had recent success against the Yankees, having given up only one run through seven innings in his last start against them. C.C. Sabathia has been pitching great after returning from the DL and pitched a great game against the White Sox in August. Lopez’s record is 4-9, and his ERA stands at 4.66. Sabathia sports a 7-4 record and his ERA is 3.30.

White Sox Steal One in New York

While there is no doubt that the Yankees are the better team at this juncture, the White Sox stood like a brick wall, stopping their winning streak (Much to the jubilation of Red Sox fans). It wasn’t just a great pitching performance from a stud rookie arm, but an all-around great game from a team that has shown flashes of brilliance.

The safe pick is obviously the Yankees, but I would recommend taking a risk in this game. Historically, even when they can’t beat inferior teams, the White Sox have been able to win at Yankee Stadium. Their starter, Lopez, has been pitching great. He is also a strikeout pitcher, and strikeouts are the Achilles’ heel for hitters like Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. Take a risk and take the Chicago White Sox at +225.
