Cardinals Looking to Snap Streak

The Cardinals led 5-1 early on Saturday night but were unable to pitch well enough to keep the lead. Michael Wacha got the start and went 5 innings allowing 5 runs(4 earned) on 6 hits and 4 walks while striking out 4. John Gant and Andrew Miller each had a clean inning out of the pen and combined to strike out 4 batters. John Brebbia was handed the loss as he gave up the go ahead home run in the 8th. Jose Martinez went 2 for 5 with a home run and a double. Matt Carpenter went 3 for 5 with a double and 2 RBI’s. Paul Goldschmidt was 0 for 5 with 3 strikeouts.

Adam Wainwright will start for the Cardinals on Sunday. He is 3-2 with a 3.73 ERA in 6 starts this season with a WHIP of 1.34 and has struck out 27 batters in 31 1/3 innings pitched. Last season he went just 2-4 with a 4.46 ERA in 8 starts. The Cardinals have had some success against Quintana in his career. They are hitting .302 in 106 at bats as a team off him but have hit just 2 home runs. Dexter Fowler is 7 for 16 with a home run and Paul DeJong has the other homer and is 2 for 8. Yadier Molina is 6 for 20 and Jose Martinez is 3 for 8. Marcelo Ozuna is 2 for 6 and Goldschmidt is 2 for 5. Matt Carpenter has been terrible against Quintana and has gone just 2 for 15.

Cubs Red Hot

Yu Darvish drew the start for Chicago and went 4 innings allowing 5 runs on 6 hits and 5 walks while striking out 4. The bullpen was incredible, going 5 scoreless innings allowing just 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 7. Pedro Strop got his 4th save of the season and struck out 2 in his perfect 9th inning. Javier Baez was the hero in this one as he went 2 for 4 and hit the go-ahead solo run in the bottom of the 8th to give the Cubs the lead. Catcher Taylor Davis got his first career hit in this one which was a game tying grand slam in the 4th inning. Kris Bryant was 1 for 2 with an RBI and Anthony Rizzo went 0 for 4.

Jose Quintana will be on the bump for the Cubs and is 3-1 with a 3.48 ERA this season. He has a WHIP of 1.22 and has struck out 38 batters in 33 2/3 innings. Last season he went 13-11 with a 4.03 ERA in 32 starts. The Cubs have seen quite a bit of Wainwright over the years and are hitting just .248 as a team against him in 149 at bats. Anthony Rizzo is 11 for 40 with a home run and Jason Heyward is 6 for 23 with a homer. Kris Bryant is just 3 for 14 and Willson Contreras is 2 for 8.

Cubs Complete Sweep

The Cubs are -140. Chicago has rebounded after a tough start to the season and are playing great baseball right now. They have won 6 in a row and 8 of their last 10. The Cardinals held the best record in baseball but have lost 3 straight games since earning that title. Adam Wainwright has been declining quickly in his career. He is having a solid season so far but I don’t see him coming up big tonight. I think he will get knocked around the ballpark as this Cubs team is too hot and talented not to hit Wainwright who has seen better days. Quintana has struggled a little bit against the Cardinals but has been able to minimize the damage. I see Chicago taking this one 5-3. Take the Cubs -140.
