Saturday Evening Baseball: Red Sox @ Tigers

The Boston Red Sox visit the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night.  First pitch is at 5:10 central time. Boston has been dominating the league this season, sitting at 69-30, winning nearly 70% of their games (Winning this game would make it exactly such).  This record puts them in first place in the American League East division. They are 5 and a half games ahead of the Yankees. Detroit, on the other hand, is 41-58, good enough for third place in the American League Central division.  They are 13 and a half games behind Cleveland in that division.

Pitching Matchup

Brian Johnson will be on the mound for Boston in this matchup.  He is 1-2 on the year, and has a 4.20 ERA. He will look to even up his record with a victory over the struggling Tigers.  For Detroit, Mike Fiers will take the hill.  Fiers is 6-6 on the year, and has a 3.70 ERA.  Boston is favored in this matchup: at -168.

Boston Red Sox

While the Red Sox pitching staff is hot, their bats may be even hotter.  In today’s MLB, it is tough enough to have one batter above .300 at this point in the season.  The Red Sox have three. Mookie Betts has been the center of MVP talks all season.  He is hitting an astounding .354 so far this year.  He has also been a major run producer, having driven in 51 runs already this season.  He has also crossed the plate 79 times, making him responsible for 107 total runs (After you subtract home runs, which he has 23 of).  JD Martinez has also been a huge producer in the Boston lineup.  He is hitting .325 on the year thus far. He has also driven in 80 runs, while scoring 72, which makes him responsible for an impressive 123 runs.  He has 29 home runs. Young sensation Andrew Benintendi is hitting .300, as well.

Detroit Tigers

Nicholas Castellanos has been the bright spot in this disappointing Detroit season.  He is hitting .304 on the year. He has also driven in 56 runs. He has also crossed the plate 54 times, making him responsible for 95 runs (15 home runs).  Jose Iglesias is hitting .265 on the season.  He has also driven in 34 runs. He has also swiped 12 bases.  In order to have a chance to win this game, Detroit will need a huge game from these two.  Other than that, they will have a very tough time.

Red Sox Trample Tigers

Castellanos may be having a good year, but the Red Sox are just plain better in every way.  Their pitching, hitting, plate discipline, coaching, and everything else is just at a higher level.  Look for the Red Sox’s hot bats to get off to a fast start and their pitching to shut down the Tiger lineup.  I suspect they will win by multiple, if not many, runs. Bet on the Boston Red Sox at -168.
