NBA News and Notes: Warriors looking to pursue Giannis; Pistons hoping to re-sign Wood

In Golden State, there is some significant interest in Milwaukee Bucks megastar Giannis Antetokounmpo. And the reason that we have to take this courting seriously is that we never truly know what the player wants to do in a situation like this.

Milwaukee had the best record in the East in consecutive years and was looking like they would be headed to the NBA Finals this season. The Warriors are hoping that he will grow unhappy there and also believe that he cannot get it done with the Bucks.

The same thing drove LeBron James to Miami for four years during his prime, where he’d win two titles. We cannot compare the two, and this isn’t even possible if the Bucks and Giannis agree to a deal before next summer. It’s just worth noting that the Warriors may go all-in if they get a shot.

Pistons Look To Re-Sign Wood

Over in Detroit, beat-writer James Edwards III reports that there is a “70% chance” that the Pistons will re-sign Christian Wood this summer. After being the G-League player of the year previously, he’s gotten the chance to strut his stuff in the NBA over the past two years.

After a good run with the Pelicans last year, he made the Pistons roster after a good showing in training camp in 2019. He was proving to be a double-double machine that could score at will from wherever he wanted to.

Given that the Pistons have a lot of other roster questions to answer this summer, this signing should be a no-brainer. Wood gives them size and floor-spacing, plus added rim protection. They would be sorely mistaken if they didn’t bring him back.

Backcourt Overload In Atlanta

Over in Atlanta, there may be a tough decision to be made for coach Lloyd Pierce next season. For the past two years, we’ve seen Kevin Huerter take most of the shooting guard minutes. And he’s proven his ability as a shooter and solid defender next to Trae Young. But, there is a tough decision to make.

Cam Reddish has been solid as a defender in his rookie year, playing several different positions. He is set as a shooting guard now, though, and he could take over as a starter for Huerter for defensive purposes. He had started to prove that he could score the ball effectively after struggling to do so for most of the year.

This is not a bad problem to have, two young guards competing for minutes on a team that hopes to contend next year. They’ll have a healthy Clint Capela come training camp, and if they re-sign John Collins, the whole gang will be back together.

This is a team that is going to quickly be on the rise. They’ll have another high draft pick, too.
