National League Baseball: St. Louis Cardinals vs. Colorado Rockies

The St. Louis Cardinals are hosting the Colorado Rockies for a four-game series this week at beautiful Busch Stadium. The Cardinals were able to win the series opener on a walk-off homer from Marcell Ozuna.  The Rockies will try to bounce back with a win in game two of the series on Tuesday.

The Colorado Rockies are in a tight battle for a playoff spot in either the National League West, or the National League Wild Card. The Rockies are just outside the playoffs now, but could sneak in by season’s end. The Cardinals are struggling with consistency in 2018, and a playoff berth does not look promising this season. The Cardinals are -112 against the Rockies on Tuesday night.

Gray Needs To Turn It Around For Rockies

The Rockies were counting on Jon Gray to be the ace of their staff, but he has struggled this season. The righty is 8-7 with a 5.16 earned run average in 19 starts this season. Gray has been better since being recalled after a brief stint at Triple-A Albuquerque. He will look to pitch deep into the game against the Cardinals.

Nolan Arenado has been the offensive hero for the Rockies this season, and might be the favorite to win the MVP Award in the National League. The All-Star third baseman has blasted 28 homers to go along with 79 runs batted entering Monday’s game. Arenado should do some damage this week in a hitter-friendly Busch Stadium.

Cardinals Struggling Offense

Matt Carpenter has been red hot for the Cardinals since the All-Star Break, but he hasn’t gotten much help. Carpenter has hit 25 homers to lead the team, and also has an on base percentage of .382. Outfielder Marcell Ozuna appears to be heating up for the Cardinals, which could be huge for them if they are going to make a late push into the playoff race.

The Cardinals have also struggled keeping starting pitchers healthy in 2018, but they have a plethora of young prospects willing to take the ball. Right-hander, Jack Flaherty will make the start for them on Tuesday. He is just 4-5 on the year, but has a very solid 3.28 earned run average. Flaherty will have to contend with a tough Rockies lineup, led by Arenado in this one.

St. Louis Wins Again

The Cardinals were able to come from behind and steal game one from the Rockies. Colorado got a monster night from Nolan Arenado, but struggled to find offense outside of him. The Rockies missed out on a chance to take over the lead in the NL Wild Card race with a loss on Monday night.

Marcell Ozuna’s walk-off homer on Monday night possibly saved the Cardinals season. St. Louis continues to hang around in the NL Wild Card race, but still have a ton of work to do this year. Matt Carpenter and Ozuna will try to continue to lead the Cardinals offense on Tuesday night. St. Louis will find enough scoring to win again. Bet the Cardinals -112 over the Rockies in game two of the series.
