Monday Night Divisional Showdown: Houston @ Seattle

The Houston Astros visit SAFECO Field on Monday night.  There, they will face off against the Seattle Mariners. First pitch is at 9:10 pm central.  Seattle has been at their heels in the standings for a while now. Right now, Seattle is 62-43, good enough for second place in the American League West division.  They are 4 games behind Houston, who is leading the division with a record of 67-40. This will be considered a big game by both teams, as it will significantly affect the division standings.  The Astros are slightly favored in this matchup: at -116.

Pitching Matchup

NOTE: Houston is coming off of a great team pitching performance, where their staff struck out 19.  However, they lost the game.

This will be a matchup of two very successful pitchers.  Gerrit Cole will be on the mound for Houston.  He is an astounding 10-2, a record that shows that his bad performances are few and far between.  His ERA is 2.54, and he has fanned 186. After the performance last night by the bullpen strikeout-wise, Cole may only need six strong innings to get the win.  However, the bullpen will have to give up less runs tonight for that to be accurate. Cole has been great throughout his career, and he will surely be looking for his 11th win of the season.

For Seattle, James Paxton will be starting.  Paxton has been having a good season as well.  He is currently 8-4 on the year, and boasts a 3.70 ERA.  He has also struck out 155. He has shown himself to be a good pitcher, but he will still need a good game against this powerful Astros lineup.

Houston Astros

The Astros have been having a great season to follow up the fact that they are the defending champions.  Jose Altuve, unsurprisingly, is leading the way in batting average.  He is hitting .329, and has driven in 46. The RBI leader, however, is the powerful Alex Bregman.  He rounds out the leadership in power categories with 22 home runs.  Look for one of these men to be a factor in how this game turns out.

Seattle Mariners

Jean Segura, as he has been, is leading the way in batting average for Seattle.  He is doing this by hitting .317. He has also had some power, as he had driven in 50 runs.  Mitch Haniger, however, has driven in the most runs, with 68.  Nelson Cruz has the most home runs, with 25.

Astros Top Mariners

Throughout his career, Gerrit Cole has proven himself to be a consistent star pitcher.  He has also proven it ten times this year in his ten wins. He will prove it again tonight, too.  If he can get through six innings and remain solid, the bullpen should bring him a victory. Also, you can generally count on the offense to provide run support, so he should have the cushion to give up a couple of runs and still get the victory.  Bet on the Houston Astros at -116.
