National League Baseball: Arizona Diamondbacks vs. St. Louis Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals will travel out West to begin a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Game one of the series will take place on Monday night, and the series will wrap up on the Fourth of July. The Diamondbacks took two out of three games from St. Louis earlier this season at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals come into this series suffering through a four-game losing streak, and having just got swept by the Atlanta Braves. The Cardinals still find themselves in third place in the National League Central, but the Cubs and Brewers are starting to create distance from them. The Diamondbacks are coming off a rough weekend against the San Francisco Giants, where they got swept in the three-game series. The Arizona Diamondbacks are -135 over the Cardinals in the series opener.

Cardinals’ Stars Coming Up Short

The Cardinals struggled mightily in the month of June in large part due to a bad month from their star players. Dexter Fowler continues to struggle in his second year as a Cardinal, and has seen his batting average drop all the way down to .171. Tommy Pham also had a horrible month of June for the Cardinals, although he did hit a three run homer on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals need their stars to provide offense if they are going to contend for the division title.

Cardinals ace, Carlos Martinez, will make the start for St. Louis in the series opener. Martinez has had an up and down 2018 season, which has also featured a brief stint on the disabled list. The hard throwing right hander is 4-4 with a 3.22 earned run average for the Cardinals, but is capable of pitching better. The Cardinals will need Martinez to be sharp on Monday night against a good Diamondbacks team.

Diamondbacks Controlling NL West

The Arizona Diamondbacks are still in control of the National League West, despite being swept by the San Francisco Giants this past weekend. The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants were supposed to the the best teams in the West, but Arizona has led the way through the first half of the season. Arizona is hoping to stay hot and stay in the lead in the National League West.

Robbie Ray will make the start for the Diamondbacks in the series opener against the Cardinals. Ray is 3-0 with a 4.01 earned run average so far in 2018. The Arizona offense hope to provide Ray with plenty of run support, led by Paul Goldschmidt. The veteran first baseman had a monster June and hopes to stay hot to keep the Diamondbacks in control of the National League West.

Arizona Takes Game One

This series is a potential playoff matchup, but the St. Louis Cardinals will have plenty of work to do. Carlos Martinez must prove that he can lead the pitching staff after a short stint on the disabled list. The Diamondbacks were hitting the ball all over the diamond in June, and Paul Goldschmidt and company look to stay hot in July. Bet the Arizona Diamondbacks -135 over the St. Louis Cardinals in the series opener.
