Life has continued to be great for the Los Angeles Dodgers, fully in control of their division and atop the National League. Coming off of consecutive trips to the World Series, here they are 107 games into the season, 31 games over .500. They took a beating against the Nationals in the series finale yesterday but still came away with a victory for the series. Not many teams can take them down with relative ease, and Colorado may have a hard time.
At the level they have been playing at, the Rockies taking a single game during their weekend series against the Reds should be considered something special. Their entire starting rotation has been atrocious, while the offense has not been able to do enough for them to get many wins. It is hard to say what they may do at the deadline, but it may be time for them to sell off a few pieces to gain assets for the years to come.
The moneyline on the Dodgers is -136, while it is +120 for the Rockies.
Dodgers Looking For Win No. 70
Cody Bellinger is leading the way for the NL’s most elite team with 34 HRs, 79 RBI, and a .329 batting average. Max Muncy’s strong play has continued into his second full season, with him crushing 26 home runs and knocking in 70 runs. The depth in their lineup is impressive, yet it would not be surprising to see them add a bat to their bench come deadline time. Their starting pitching has also been incredible, led by Clayton Kershaw, who could end up without a loss in July. They do not have a single starting pitcher with an ERA above 3.99.
Kenta Maeda will be making his 21st start of the season for the Dodgers tonight. He has gone 7-7, posting a 3.81 ERA in 108 2/3 innings of work. He has struck out 113 batters while walking a team-high 36.
Rockies Try To Break Out
Only the Tigers have looked worse than this team over the past month, as they’ve gone 9-22 over their past 31 games. Colorado has been unable to get much done. Nolan Arenado has cooled down over the last few weeks but still has 22 HRs, 77 RBI, and a .303 average. It is crazy to think that four hitters from this lineup made the All-Star Game, and now those same guys cannot produce enough runs to lead the team to some wins. A lot of work needs to be done with this team, and though all of their struggling pitchers are under 28, are ANY of them part of the future?
Jon Gray is set to make his 22nd start (23rd appearance). The 27-year-old has posted a 9-7 record with a 4.05 ERA in 124 1/3 innings of work. He has struck out 128 batters, while walking 50, struggling with control at times.
