Midwest Rivalry: Milwaukee Brewers vs. St. Louis Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers will renew their rivalry this weekend in Milwaukee. The Brewers were able to improve upon their outstanding home record by winning game one of the series, 11-3. The Cardinals will try to bounce back and steal game two of the series on Friday night. The Brewers are in a tight battle with the Chicago Cubs atop the National League Central Division standings. St. Louis finds themselves in third place in the division, but are still within striking distance if the top teams falter. The St. Louis Cardinals are +102 against the Milwaukee Brewers in game two of the series.

Guerra Makes Start For Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers will send hard throwing right hander, Junior Guerra to the mound on Friday night. Guerra has lost his last three decisions, but has pitched very well in all three of those starts. The 33 year old is having the best year of his career, and sports 2.89 ERA through 13 starts this season. The Brewers have struggled to provide Guerra with run support all season, but will look to change that on Friday. One of the biggest strengths of the Brewers is the backend of their bullpen.

The Brewers feature a trio of flamethrowers in their ‘pen, with Josh Hader being the most impressive of the group. Hader has struck out 77 batters in just 38.2 innings this season. If the Brewers can grab a lead through six innings, it usually turns into a victory.

Cardinals Trying to Fix Bullpen

While the Brewers have a bullpen that is a strength for them, the Cardinals appear to have just the opposite. St. Louis has struggled to find reliable pitching in later innings of the game, and don’t have a true closer. Greg Holland was brought in to be the closer in 2018, but early struggles forced the Cardinals to look a different direction. The Cardinals have lost many close games due to their bullpen this season.

Free agent signee, Marcell Ozuna, is starting to deliver for the St. Louis Cardinals after a rocky start. Ozuna has his batting average up to .283 on the season, and it appears that his power is returning as well. The former Marlin has now hit 10 home runs while driving in 40 runs for the Redbirds. Ozuna is doing his best to lead the Cardinals offense, but St. Louis still needs more production up and down the lineup.

Cardinals Win Game 2 of Series

Milwaukee was able to take advantage of a sloppy Cardinals defense to roll to a victory in the series opener. The Cardinals committed four errors as a team on Thursday night, and must play much better on Friday night to beat the Brewers. Milwaukee hopes to keep pounding out runs and create more distance between themselves and the Cardinals in the standings. The Cardinals will send young Jack Flaherty to the mound in game two, and he has been extremely impressive this year in a small sample size. Look for the Cardinals offense to bounce back as well on Friday night, and for the Cardinals to win game two of the series. Bet the St. Louis Cardinals +102 over the Milwaukee Brewers.
