Little League World Series Classic: Mets (53-69) vs. Phillies (68-55)

It has been another long year for the Mets, the managerial change they made prior to the year not having much of an impact on the team’s success. As good as Jacob DeGrom has been, with his sub 2.00 ERA, he has only eight wins, because he gets no run support.

The Phillies on the other chance have been good with first-year manager Gabe Kapler, as they are in a tight race with the Braves for first place in the NL East. The Nationals down year has opened the door for both teams.

New York Mets

Not to knock Asdrubal Cabrera, but h should not be leading a team in both home runs and RBI’s. He’s also leading the team with a .277 batting average. Only four players on the team are hitting better than .242, which has been a big issue for these guys. They can’t get anybody on base, and they haven’t a second pitcher besides DeGrom who can be a regular winner. Yoenis Cespedes had his year cut short, while Todd Frazier, Adrian Gonzalez, and Jay Bruce have all struggled.

The Mets will send Jason Vargas to the mound for his fourteenth start of the season tonight. This has really not been a good year for him, as he has posted a 2-8 record, and a 8.10 ERA in 53 1/3 innings. He has struck out 44 batters while walking 23. He was decent in his last start as he dropped his ERA down from 8.75, allowing two runs on five hits over six innings against the Orioles.

Philadelphia Phillies

Led by the rejuvenated Rhys Hoskins, and recently hot Maikel Franco, the Phillies have been making some noise. They are thirteen games over .500, and tied in a tight race with the Braves for the NL East title. They have gotten a terrific year from Aaron Nola, who is in the thick of the NL CY Young race, while their bullpen has been coming through for them. Odubel Herrera has also been coming up big for these guys, who could really use this win tonight.

The Phillies will send Nick Pivetta to the mound for his twenty-sixth start of the season, tying last year’s total. He has gone 7-9, posting a 4.37 ERA in 125 2/3 innings of work. He has a terrific strikeout to walk ratio, with 153 K’s and only 34 BB’s. He allowed one run on three hits over six innings of work against the Phillies in his last outing.

Phillies take care of business

It will be a good night for Nick Pivetta and co. as they earn their 69th victory of the season. Ten strikeouts over seven innings of work from Pivetta should do the trick.

Rhys Hoskins and Carlos Santana will both go yard for the Phillies, as they toast Jason Vargas for five runs. Good day to be a Philly fan.
