Beginning next week, the state of Illinois will see consideration given to the topic of sports betting. A hearing is scheduled for April 3rd, with the Gaming Committee calling the hearing. Lawmakers will be meeting early in the morning to discuss three bills, all of which cover sports betting in some form or fashion.
According to LegalSportsReport, the hearing has been titled: Sports Wagering—Status and Regulatory Systems. The Gaming Committee will be reviewing sports betting as a whole as well as breaking down the subject into categories based on the proposed legislation.
During the meeting, one bill to be discussed is S 2478. This measure would see a Sports Betting Consumer Protection Act created and was proposed by Senator Steve Stadelman. S 3125 will also be on the table, proposed by Senator William Brady. This bill would amend the current state Horse Racing Act to include sports betting as a legalized activity. The last bill to be considered is S 3432. This measure was introduced by Senator Napolean Harris and would create The Sports Wagering Act.
Each sports betting proposal is different so it will give lawmakers in Illinois plenty to discuss during the hearing. During the meeting, lawmakers will hopefully be able to reach some type of consensus in order to create one main bill that will see sports betting come to pass in the state.
In the US, sports betting is currently banned for the most part based on The Professional Sports and Amateur Protection Act. The United States Supreme Court is set to rule on the Christie vs NCAA case soon, which calls into question whether the Act is to be deemed unconstitutional. If the court rules in favor of New Jersey, sports betting could be legalized in any state within the US.
If lawmakers of Illinois are able to create legislation and pass a bill into law allowing sports wagering, they would be ready to get started, if SCOTUS provides a positive ruling for New Jersey.
