College Basketball News and Notes: Transfer Market Still Going Strong

The NCAA transfer season may be winding down, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t still quality players mulling decisions. Last week, former Gardner-Webb guard Jose Perez chose the Marquette Golden Eagles, while former Wake Forest center Olivier Sarr took his talents to Big Blue Nation in Lexington.

The most coveted transfer remaining on the market now is big man Romello White. White surprisingly announced he was transferring from Arizona State over a week ago. He averaged 10 points, 9 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game last season for the Sun Devils.

Before ending up at Arizona State, White was committed to Tennessee and then Georgia Tech. He, unfortunately, did not qualify academically at Tech and ended up in Tempe. White started all three seasons for Bobby Hurley and was one of the centerpieces to a team that was easily one of the 25 best teams heading into next season, assuming Remy Martin and Alonzo Verge return to school after testing the draft process.

An early prediction flew into 247sports.com that White was headed to Vanderbilt. This makes sense, given that White played for Vanderbilt head coach Jerry Stackhouse’s AAU team in high school. The wire has been quiet on this front ever since, though, other than White saying he has heard from more than a dozen teams since entering the portal.

California state schools to continue with most classes online

The State of California college system will continue into the fall semester, with a majority of their classes planning to be held virtually. The state has often been setting the trend in regards to the pandemic, and it would not be shocking to see other states make the same commitment in the coming days.

It may be time to come to grips with the notion that the 2019-2020 NCAA basketball season may not be the only one affected. There is a real possibility that college basketball does not return in November, or even in this calendar year. New waves of diagnoses in China and South Korea, where cities have been opened up again, reveal that this shutdown may be here to stay for the foreseeable future.

NCAA President, Mark Emmert, said Tuesday that he would not mandate a specific start time for NCAA seasons and instead, he would leave school officials and state governing bodies to make those decisions. This, again, further solidifies the belief that college basketball very well may not return on schedule.

Nojel Eastern enters transfer portal

In one of the more surprising stories this week, Purdue guard Nojel Eastern has entered the transfer portal. Eastern immediately becomes one of the most sought after free agents in college basketball after averaging 5 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists per game during his three-year career as a Boilermaker. While these counting statistics may not be jaw-dropping, what is special about Eastern is his ability to play defense and the advantage his size gives him against other guards at 6’7 and 225 pounds.
