Chicago White Sox at San Francisco Giants Betting Preview

Friday’s MLB schedule includes an interleague game between the Chicago White Sox and the San Francisco Giants. At home, the Giants are favored with a -150 moneyline compared to Chicago’s moneyline of +130. This game also has an over/under of 7.5 runs.

The White Sox have spent most of the season hovering around .500 but currently find themselves four games under. That’s the case after the White Sox lost six of their last eight games to close out June. The worst part is that most of those losses came against the Orioles and Angels, two teams Chicago should have felt better about beating.

Of course, the Giants have also struggled during the latter part of June, losing seven of 10 to close out the month. Of those seven losses, four came against the Pirates, Reds, and Tigers. As a result, the Giants are now 6.5 games off the pace in the NL West and a game out of a Wild Card spot.

Stuck in the Cobb

With San Francisco’s recent struggles, this may not be the ideal time for Alex Cobb to take the mound. The veteran is just 3-3 with a 5.48 ERA over his 10 starts this season. Cobb was also sidelined with a neck injury last month but has made two starts since returning, allowing four earned runs over 8.1 innings of work, so he’s still far from his best.

Not surprisingly, the Giants have been a little erratic offensively during their 3-7 stretch at the end of June, scoring three runs or less in six of those ten games. In fairness, the San Francisco lineup has had some big games during that stretch and has some big bats that can do damage. Evan Longoria and Joc Pederson have been crushing it lately, although they aren’t getting much help, especially with Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford MIA.

No Chance, Lance

Veteran Lance Lynn will get the start for Chicago on Friday. The 35-year-old hasn’t had the best fortune this year, pitching to a 6.19 ERA over his first three starts after not making his season debut until June 13 because of a knee injury. His strikeout numbers have been good, but Lynn has allowed three home runs and 20 hits over 16 innings of work this season.

Meanwhile, the White Sox have had trouble getting their offense going. They have scored just 22 total runs in their last seven games, and half of those runs came in a single game, averaging less than two runs per game in the other six games. Jose Abreu has been on fire lately, although key figures like Andrew Vaughn and AJ Pollock have disappeared completely on top of Eloy Jimenez and Yasmani Grandal missing due to injury.

Giant Effort

It’s tough to feel comfortable picking either of these teams to win this game because both have struggled lately. But the Giants have been solid at home this year, and Cobb looks to be in a little better shape than Lynn right now. Bet on San Francisco holding serve at home on Friday and taking the series opener.
