Chicago White Sox at San Francisco Giants Betting Preview

After a tense 1-0 game on Friday night, the Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants continue their series on Saturday afternoon. The White Sox scored the only run of Friday’s game in the top of the 9th to win, although they are underdogs on Saturday with a moneyline of +120. San Francisco’s moneyline is listed at -140, while the over/under for the game is set at just seven runs.

With Friday’s loss, the Giants continued what has been a troubling stretch for them. They have now lost eight of their last 11 games, with five of those eight losses coming against teams with a losing record. As a result, San Francisco is just five games over .500 and 7.5 games back in the NL West.

Granted, the White Sox weren’t exactly on a hot streak late in June. Before Friday’s win, Chicago had lost six of eight games, so they are still three games under .500 heading into Saturday. However, they are far from out of contention, just 5.5 games out in the AL Central and four games out of a Wild Card spot.

Cease and Desist

Dylan Cease will get the start for Chicago on Saturday, as he hopes to continue a strong season. Over his first 15 starts, Cease is 6-3 with a 2.56 ERA, becoming the leader of Chicago’s rotation in the process. He’s coming off a phenomenal month of June in which he posted a 0.33 ERA, helping the White Sox win five of his last six starts.

Of course, the White Sox still need to get going offensively. They’ve scored just a single run in back-to-back games and have scored two runs or less in five of their last eight games. While injuries have played a role in some of Chicago’s offensive struggles this year, few hitters outside of Jose Abreu have produced with any regularity lately.

Caught in the Webb

The Giants will look to Logan Webb to get them back on track in Saturday’s game. Much like Cease, Webb has had a strong 2022 campaign, going 7-2 with a 3.04 ERA over his first 15 starts of the season. Webb posted a 2.08 ERA over his five starts during the month of June, although the Giants were just 2-3 in those games.

Much like the White Sox, the San Francisco lineup has scuffled in recent days. After getting shut out on Friday, the Giants have managed just nine total runs over their last four games. Joc Pederson has kept things rolling while Evan Longoria is also swinging a hot bat, but it’s been hard to find other reliable contributors in the San Francisco lineup lately.

A Giant Effort

After these teams combined for just one run on Friday, it’s hard to believe that either one is ready to break out of a team-wide slump. That makes the under on seven runs the best bet in this game, especially since Cease and Webb have both pitched well in recent weeks. In terms of a winner, the Giants still deserve the benefit of the doubt, as they have played well at home this year and have been the better team for most of the season.
