While previous reports suggest online poker may be off the table in the state of Pennsylvania, one lawmaker says that’s just not the case. Just a few days ago we reported that budget issues have hindered the state from moving forward with legislation for online poker gaming. Now, we have learned that the option could still happen this year, as several online gaming bills are still under consideration.
According to a report at CardPlayer, Representative John Payne is stating that the discussion for online poker in the state is alive and well. Payne told the news source that without a budget agreement, no one knows what will happen with the bills supporting gaming expansion, including one introduced by Payne himself.
A large concern towards the proposals for online poker gaming in the state if the tax rate. One of the top proposals under consideration has a tax rate set of 54%. This is quite high when compared to other states in the US offering online gambling including Nevada which has a rate of less than 7%. New Jersey has an 18% tax rate with Delaware having the highest rate, currently set at 45%.
With Payne’s bill, online gaming would take place at a tax rate of less than 15% while another proposal has a rate of less than 30%. The variance in tax rate suggestions in each proposal is a main subject of debate when it comes to online gaming.
It only makes sense for Pennsylvania to move forward with online gaming options as they are second in the US when it comes to the commercial casino marketplace. Just behind Nevada, who already offers online poker gaming, Pennsylvania could easily slip into the market and become a contender with the likes of Delaware and New Jersey, not to mention other states looking to expand into online game play.
There are still a few months left in 2015 and we could very well see some movement in regards to online poker gaming in the state of Pennsylvania. Only time will tell what will happen, all the while we will be watching and waiting to see what takes place!
