GOP Presidential Candidates Not Set On Stopping iGambling

us flagOn Tuesday, GOP presidential candidates were on hand in Las Vegas at The Venetian to debate certain topics. It was believed the candidates would be in support of Sheldon Adelson’s plan to pass legislation that would restore the Interstate Federal Wire Act but this does not seem to be the case. Certain candidates responded during interviews that they do not have a set opinion on the subject as of yet.

Speaking with the editorial board of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Former Governor of Florida, Jeb Bush, stated that he wanted to understand each side of the online gambling debate before he could make a decision. Bush stated he was not giving a definitive answer since he has not seen the pros and cons of each side. Bush says he believes in states’ rights and that there should be a greater deference to the states. However, he is not a big fan and will remain neutral until he can receive a full briefing.

Soon after Bush made his statements, Ted Cruz, the Texas Senator, commented on the subject as well. Cruz stated that he has not taken a position either on the RAWA bill. However, Cruz did state that he believes states have the determination as to what level of casino gaming should be allowed.

Interestingly enough, the American Gaming Association released a survey on the subject of candidates and gaming, showing that almost 40% of casino employees in Nevada would not vote for a candidate who has a negative opinion on the subject of gaming. Casino employees are focused on the presidential campaigns and see Donald Trump, the Republican front runner, and Hilary Clinton, the leading candidate for the Democratic Party as the top two who understand the gaming industry.

Just a few days ago, a Congressional hearing meant to be of benefit to RAWA did not go as planned. A Casino in Every Smartphone—Law Enforcement Implications was hosted by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which is chaired by Jason Chaffetz, the Representative who proposed the RAWA legislation. The hearing did not seem to go in favor of RAWA and the recent comments by the GOP Presidential candidates goes to show that not everyone seems to have the same goals as Sheldon Adelson would prefer.
