Poker Hall of Fame Voting Ends Saturday; Controversy Surrounds Push for Isai Scheinberg Nomination

This Saturday, the public voting period of the Poker Hall of Fame for 2015 will come to an end. The WSOP will close access to voting and then ten finalists will be found from the first round of the process. Once the final ten is named, the living members of the Poker Hall of Fame plus a panel of select media members will cast their vote as to who should be included in the class of 2015.

Once chosen, the inductees will be placed in the Hall of Fame in November as part of the Main Event final table ceremonies. Last year, Jack McClelland and Daniel Negreanu were the two remaining of the finalists and were inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame.

Several campaigns have been in the works since voting began with friends and family trying to see Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliot being added to the list. Ulliot unfortunately passed away earlier this year but had a long and successful poker career, able to earn over $5 million in tournament winnings.

Another push for an individual to be added to the finalists list involves Isai Scheinberg. Having founded PokerStars in 2001, many feel as though Scheinberg deserves a spot in the Poker Hall of Fame. However, others do not want to see the founder added to the HOF due to his involvement with Black Friday, having yet to answer to the charges in the matter. Scheinberg sold his stake in the online poker company but played a large role in the company that has not been forgotten.

Pushing for Scheinberg to be nominated is martial arts expert, Terrence Chan. Chan has stated that Scheinberg has done more to grow poker than anyone in the world over the past twenty years. The founder does meet the criteria, having contributed significantly to the growth and success of the game of poker, a requirement of the nomination. However, his involvement with Black Friday and still being classified as a fugitive will most likely harm his chances of being added to the finalist list.

It will be interesting to see who makes the cut and will be added to the Poker Hall of Fame. My hope is that Jennifer Harman will finally get a nod. Having been a finalist several times, one can only hope that this is her year to shine.
