Phil Hellmuth began the 2021 World Series of Poker (WSOP) on a high note and maintained it throughout the season. With the season coming to an end, Phil has cashed in several times and pushed his way forward to take second place as the WSOP Play of the Year (POY).
It started with the 2021 WSOP Main Event ending, leaving all eyes on Event #84:$50,000 Pot-Limit Omaha High Roller. This was such a high buy-in, this event was for high rollers only, and the race to the first position would be over the top.
It was the most expensive event with one re-entry. As there was no such event in 2019, there was no defending champion playing the match.
Eighty-five players listed for the event created a guaranteed prize pool of $4,069 375, with the winner assured of earning over $1 million in cash. The poker pros that entered the event include Phil Hellmuth, Dan Cates, Dan Smith, Daniel Negreanu, Chance Kornuth, and Shaun Deeb.
Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth were among the final nine players. With Daniel having not won any significant title during the season, this was his time to reclaim his place. He placed well until three players, including Hellmuth and Jeremy Ausmus, remained on the final table.
With the three on the table, the action was intense. Following a three-hour battle, Negreanu lost to the other two players. He also won $519,764 in prize money.
Hellmuth was determined to win his second title during the 2021 WSOP event. However, Ausmus eliminated him in second place. This led to Hellmuth pocketing his largest win at the 2021 WSOP event of $734,807, while Ausmus pocketed $1,188 918 for his championship.
Hellmuth Breaks Singles Record
At the start of the 2021 WSOP tournament, Phil had 16 gold bracelets under his sleeves. By adding his 17th WSOP bracelet following the win at Event #31:$1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw last month, he has the most WSOP gold bracelets.
Hellmuth has constantly performed well during the tournament, reaching five other final tables, tying the record of reaching six final tables during a single tournament. The other player that ever reached six final tables at a WSOP event is An Tran in 1993.
While he had maintained the record for over two decades, Tran had never won a WSOP bracelet event in 1993 or made it as a runner-up. By reaching the final table during Event #83, Phil broke Tran’s record.
Now, Phil holds the record for reaching seven final tables in a single WSOP tournament. He also earned over $1.1 million for reaching final tables seven times during the 2021 WSOP period. This pushes his total poker winnings to over $26 million and places him in 18th place on the Hendon Mob’s All-Time Money List.
Phil Takes Second Place on POY Leaderboard
By taking second place during the $50,000 PLO High Roller event, Phil added to his WSOP POY points. Now, the poker brat holds second place with 3,664.09 points, 333 points less than 2021 WSOP POY winner Josh Arieh with 3,996.87 points. Phil would have loved to lead the leaderboard, adding to his resume a successful 2021.
