In September, the Pennsylvania Legislature will be back at work and a top priority of lawmakers will be to pass a gaming reform package. Over the past few months, we have watched as lawmakers have continued to struggle when it comes to what should be offered in the state by way of a gaming expansion. We know that online gaming and daily fantasy sports are activities that most are in approval of within the state legislature but video gaming terminals have gotten in the way of a package moving forward. Hopefully beginning next month, lawmakers will be able to move forward and see some progress on the matter.
Revenue from the gaming package is supposed to be helping fund the state budget but a package must first be approved. Online gaming and daily fantasy sports are not the hold up. It seems that VGTs are the controversial gaming option that is keeping the state from moving forward with a gaming expansion.
To hopefully solve the matter, the Senate Law & Justice Committee have schedule a hearing for the 19th of September. The chairman of the committee, Senator Chuck Mcllhinney, called for the hearing which will cover video gaming terminals along with other issues.
Mcllhinney issued a press release on the matter stating that those who are in favor of video gaming terminals recognize that the state is already seeing an overabundance of illegal machines. Proponents of VGTs would like to see legislation created so the gaming that is already taking place illegally will put money into the state’s coffers. Opponents of the gaming option feel that legalizing the machines will increase their popularity and hurt the casinos of the state.
For some time now it has seemed that the VGT issue is the main reason why lawmakers have been unable to pass a gaming reform package. The hearing will hopefully put lawmakers on the right track to coming to some sort of consensus so that Pennsylvania can be the next in line to begin offering online casino and poker gaming, alongside daily fantasy sports and whatever else lawmakers decide to throw in the mix.
