During the Winter Open earlier this year at the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City, a counterfeit chip incident took place. The poker tournament was shut down after it was believed that fake chips had been placed in the tournament. After an investigation, it was found that Christian Lusardi had placed the chips in the event and had even cashed out for almost $7,000. Lusardi was arrested and charged for his crimes. The casino then looked into different security measures to see that this type of incident does not happen again. New, high tech chips have now been added to the poker tables to keep counterfeits at bay.
According to a recent report by The Associated Press, the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa has added high tech chips that are more in-depth to stop counterfeits from coming into play. The chips are more colorful and include an element of authentication that can only be seen with ultraviolet light. The chips were added to the casino just in time for the Spring Open, which began earlier this week.
Joe Lupo is the Senior Vice President of the Borgata and he stated that the new chips were very expensive to put into play but also very necessary. Lupo stated that for the casino to offer the biggest tournaments in the area and as a market leader, they must be able to ensure the integrity of the games that take place.
Currently, Lusardi is still in police custody and will eventually go to trial. The Associated Press tried to reach him for comment but to no avail. The poker player was arrested for the incident after a clog was found in the hotel bathrooms. The clog was traced back to his room and it was determined that Lusardi tried to flush the fake chips down the toilet.
It will be interesting to see if the poker chip changes will keep criminals from trying to create their counterparts. By adding the authentication feature, it does make it quite more difficult for reproductions to be made.
