The state of Nevada is at the forefront of casino gaming, being the largest provider of land based casino gaming as well as being one of the first in the US to offer online poker gaming options. Nevada offers online poker gaming via WSOP and additional gaming sites are in the works for the near future. It was not too long ago that Nevada joined forces with Delaware to share player pools in the online poker industry. During all of this, a bill was introduced and backed by the Las Vegas Sands Corporation which would limit the gaming compacts the state would be able to make with other jurisdictions.
AB 414 was created to prevent Nevada from partnering with other states for online gaming play except when it comes to poker. Now Nevada already offers online poker and has partnered with Delaware, leaving themselves open to partnering with additional states as legislation is approved across the US. However, AB 414 would have kept the state from moving forward to offer online casino gaming contracts with other states.
In April, the bill moved forward from the Assembly with a vote of 23 to 17 with two excused. The measure then moved on to the Senate Judiciary Committee where it did not move forward. The deadline to move forward yet again was May 15th and the bill missed this deadline.
The Nevada Gaming Control board commented on the bill back in March, stating the measure would have no ‘current fiscal impact’ on the state as Nevada only offers regulated online poker. So far the state has elected to stick strictly to poker gaming and not offer online casino games, but if this bill had passed, the option to extend an online casino presence within the United States would be null and void.
