Poker pro Marvin Rettenmaier is having a fantastic season on the tournament circuit. The pro recently won the World Poker Tour Merit Cyprus Classic and with the win, the poker pro made the record books. Rettenmaier won the WPT Championship in May and with the Merit Cyprus Classic win, he is the first player to ever win back to back titles on the tour.
The Merit Cyprus Classic took place at the Merit Crystal Cove Hotel and Casino and had 329 players competing. Rettenmaier started the final day of play in third place and was just behind chip leader Ran Azor and Arur Voskanyan. Kiryl Radzivonau, Victor Paraschiv and Joseph El Khoury also sat at the final table.
El Khoury was the short stack and looked to be exiting early but this was not to be. The player would defeat Radzivonau in a big hand to move to a larger stack making Radzivonau the short stack. Rettenmaier would then take chips from El Khoury with A-3 off suit and this would push Rettenmaier to a nice chip stack.
It would take almost two and a half hours before a player was eliminated from the final table. Radzivonau would be out in sixth and since Rettenmaier took him out, he would take the chip lead. Play started to move faster after the blinds and antes began to increase. El Houry would exit in fifth, followed by Parashiv and Azor to leave Voskanyan and Rettenmaier in heads up play.
Once heads up play began, it would take just two hands for Rettenmaier to earn the win. Rettenmaier would move all in and Voskanyan would call. Rettenmaier held J-9 and Voskanyan was ahead with A-10. The flop fell 9-8-4 and this put Rettenmaier in the lead. A Q on the turn gave Voskanyan an out but a 7 on the river would seal the deal and Rettenmaier would earn the title win.
