The 8th Full Tilt Online Poker Series (FTOPS VIII) shot forth from the starting gates Wednesday with the first event, a Six-Handed No Limit Hold’em tournament, followed Thursday by events 2 and 3, Pot Limit Omaha and No Limit Hold’em respectively. What came as little surprise to most followers of the series was that all three events turned out more players than expected, raising each prize pool well over the guaranteed amount.
FTOPS VIII – Event #1
May 7th saw the kick off of the 24-tournament FTOPS event with a $200 buy-in, $750,000 Guaranteed Six-Handed No Limit Hold’em match. A field of 4,158 brought the actual prize pool up to $831,600. Full Tilt Pro David Chiu hosted the event while also taking part, but was eliminated early in 2,956th position. Other Full Tilt Pros included Scott Fischman and John D’Agostino, who finished in 18th and 97th respectively. Taking the crown, however, was none other than professional poker player and Card Player Magazine’s ‘Online Poker Player of the Year’, Isaac Baron, under the nickname “the guru 11”. Baron pocketed $158,852 for his tremendously skilled efforts.
FTOPS VIII – Event #2
May 8th saw the start of FTOPS VIII Event #2,a $240+$16 Pot Limit Omaha tournament hosted by Full Tilt Poker Pro Max Pescatori. The $200,000 guaranteed prize pool was again larger than expected, as 1,070 entries raised the GP to $214,000. The final table came down to heads-up play between “whothedonk” and “gregguiche”, but in the end, it was “whothedonk” that took the title, along with $48,150 to show for it.
FTOPS VIII – Event #3
Later on the same day, Event #3 got underway, a $500+$35 No Limit Hold’em event with a guaranteed prize pool of $300,000. For the third time in a row, the field of 729 entrants was higher than anticipated, raising the prize pool to $364,000. Full Tilt Pro David ‘The Dragon’ Pham took the honors of hosting this event, which saw some very large names in the professional poker community; Erick Lindgren and Mike Matusow among them, who both finished in the money. As the table came to a close, however, it was “BOP B 3AKOHE 1” taking down David “davidp18” Peters in heads-up to claim the 1st place prize of $76,545. Peters earned $51,030 for his 2nd place finish.
FTOPS VIII – Event #4
