Dublin, Ireland will once again host the unique charity poker event, Simon Poker Tournament, as part of the PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT). Already confirmed to appear at the beneficial poker tournament are snooker greats Joe Doherty and Steve Davis, scheduled to begin November 3, 2007 at the RDS, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.
The Simon Poker Tournament benefits the Simon Dublin homeless charity. More than 200 players turned out last year, combined with private and corporate donations to raises near €50,000. The event proved to be one of the most popular stops on the EPT circuit, drawing such names as Dave Colclough, Julian Gardner, Scott Gray, Stephen Hendry, Nick Leeson, Jesse May, Kevin O’Connell, Donnacha O’Dea, Matthew Stevens and “Mad” Marty Wilson.
Organized by a collective of players including Padraig Parkinson, spokesperson for the group, said, “The event was a massive success last year and many thanks to John Duthie from the EPT and Charles Harbourne from the Merrion Casino Club for this wonderful gesture. It’s a great opportunity for players to sit down, have some craic, and play with some of the biggest names in the game without having to take out a bank loan.”
John Duthie, head of the EPT revealed his anticipation, “We’re delighted to be associated with the tournament and I look forward to playing in it myself.” Then he quipped, “I just hope I can avoid Parkinson at the tables and in the bar!”
A host of European sports stars are expected to attend, along with last year’s winner and former World Champion Noel Furlong. To keep spirits high and cash flowing in, a high-octane auction will be run by the rollicking antics of “Mad” Marty Wilson.
Entry to the EPT Simon Poker Tournament is €300 + €30 (registration fee), with €100 going directly to the Simon Dublin charity, and the other €200 to the prize pool.
Already a number of online poker communities have thrown their support behind the charity event, offering satellite tournaments and their own donations. Thus far PokerStars, Green Joker Poker and 888 have all hopped on board, with others as yet unannounced, but soon to follow.
