The $3,500 buy-in World Poker Tour (WPT) Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown’s field of 99 entrants was reduced to 16 players on Monday evening, Day 3. Some of the finalists included Darren Elias, James Calderaro, Mark Davis (chip leader), and Viet Vo.
Shorr Beats the Defending Champion As Kuo and Gavin Fall
Day 3 action started on Level 21 at noon as less than one hundred entries competed for the title. But this number reduced fast as hands played out at Seminole Hard Rock’s Grand Ballroom.
Lexy Gavin, a talented poker coach, and Kitty Kuo, Natural8 ambassador, sat at Table 16, being among the remaining four women in the field that earlier included Altynai Fung, Ema Zajmovic, Angelina Rich, Rania Nasreddine, and Kristen Bicknell.
One player shouted that two girls always sit at the same table. Gavin exited the event after Kumal Shah’s Cowboys defeated her Big Slick. She won $9,300 for being in the 91st position.
Kuo later left the ballroom holding a payout slip. Adam Hendrix spoke with PokerNews on Day 2, and he sat at Table 23 with Jonathan Jaffe. The former defended a big blind from Ilir Rugova’s raise in late position.
The flop came {a-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{q-Clubs}, Rugova wagered 55,000 as Hendrix check-raised to 160,000. His rival called {5-Clubs} on the turn.
Then, Hendrix made a 275,000 size up as Rugova ran two-time extensions, folded, and revealed the {a-Spades}.
He congratulated Hendrix for making a good bet. Shannon Shorr sat behind the two players and was active in the pots. He placed a three-bet after the cutoff opened.
It later re-raised all-in for 800,000 before Shorr tossed his cards. The player later took down a big pot after his ace-jack beat other hands-on an ace-high board.
Brek Schutten sat at Shorr’s left side. He won $1,261,095 in the 2021 Championship Event, but a player beside him cut short his run after his pocket eights lost to Shorr’s ace-ten.
Shorr informed PokerNews during a short break that the event was smooth. His career earnings increased to $2.3 million when he won a recent U.S. Poker Open first event in Las Vegas.
Berkey Puts Up a Spirited Fight at the Pro-Packed Table
Table 6 had a stacked lineup being among the remaining six tables in Level 24. It constituted Berkey, Shorr, and Hendrix.
Berkey, who founded Solve For Why, told PokerNews that the Championship Event was swingy, and he was at around 1,915,000, the same stack he had at the beginning of Day 3.
He won $31,250 a few weeks ago in a BetMGM Pennsylvania March Poker Mania Main Event. The player enjoyed the tournament as he streamed several BetMGM events.
Elias Ends the Day After Busting Hendrix
Shorr exited the event at position 37 and won $24,000, as Berkey won $34,000 after getting eliminated at position 21. The Grand Ballroom had intense energy as 16 players proceeded to Day 4.
Hendrix completed in a big blind and small blind as Darren Elias his various options. The flop came {a-Spades}{4-Spades}{2-Diamonds} while Hendrix check-called a 525,000 bet.
The turn brought {9-Diamonds} as Hendrix re-checked. Elias tabled {5-Clubs}{3-Hearts} for a nut straight as Hendrix tabled {a-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} for top pair and drew dead before a {j-Spades} river, and won $41,000 after exiting the event at position 17.
