Daniel Negreanu’s name pops up in most poker tournaments. However, it is long since he was crowned a cup champion of any tournament. Daniel has broken the trend by cashing four times during the eight-event PokerGO Cup championship series and becoming the inaugural champion.
The 46-year-old poker pro cashed in $996,200 in earnings from four matches. However, he did not reach the final event following a brutal elimination from the high stake festival.
How It Went Down
Sam Soverel used his pocket eights to remove Daniel with his pocket aces. Negreanu had to watch the rest of the match from the sidelines. At the time, Daniel was rooting for Cary Katz, who was playing heads-up with Sam Soverel.
Daniel’s reason to support Kats was based on the fact that if Soverel won, he would have more points to surpass Negreanu and win the PokerGO Cup player of the series points. But, Katz won the heads-up battle against Soverel, making Daniel the ultimate winner.
Daniel also won another $50,000 for becoming the champion. In his response to his victory, Daniel said he was a big nerd even when he was a kid. He could choose two wrestlers and ask them to fight until he got a winner. Daniel would then compile and keep statistics of the wrestling match, similar to the player of the year records.
Daniel was excited about the win. He said that winning a tournament was awesome but insisted winning a player of the series was better.
More About The Poker Series
Daniel finished fourth in the final event of the poker series. He won $230,000. El Jefe, Cary Katz, and Sam Soverel remained for the rest of the game. Daniel’s elimination was ugly. He even confirmed it. But, he was proud of the way Katz played.
Katz is usually considered a recreational player. But, his prowess in the recent match proves he is a pro poker player. For example, all players who participated in the $1000,000 buy-in were professional poker players except for Cary.
Negreanu’s Return to Glory
The first highest score Daniel got in the $50,000 buy-in high roller in the poker series. It attracted 35 entries, with Daniel coming on top, marking his first live tournament win since October 2013.
Previously, Negreanu had cashed in 144 events, accumulating over $22 million. However, he had not scored a title in 2819 days. But, Negreanu broke the trend by winning $700,000 in the penultimate match. Earlier in the PokerGO series, he had finished eighth in the $10,000 no-limit buy-in. He also finished sixth in the $25,000 buy-in.
With these wins, Daniel’s career tournament earnings have increased to $42,370,255. These earnings put Daniel in third place on the poker all-time money list. Eric Seidel, a poker hall of fame member, comes forth with $37,936,451. The two-time World Poker Tour winner and six-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner finished with 537 PokerGo Cup points. Daniel has 40 points ahead of his runner-up Ali Imsirovic.
Ali won two titles during the PokerGO Cup series. Katz comes third with 475 points, David Coleman with 470, Alex Foxen with 421, and Soverel closes at sixth with 361.
