Event #36 of the World Series of Poker finished up late last night and it was Craig McCorkell who earned the first place finish. McCorkell outlasted the 587 player field to earn the coveted Gold WSOP bracelet. The event was a No Limit Hold’em Shootout tournament and had a buy-in of $3,000.
The final table would see ten players returning and the fist to go would be Sardor Gaziev. Sardor was up against Jonathan Lane and Lane had trip fives so he was able to defeat Sardor’s pocket tens. Next up would be Joe Tehan. Tehan would go all in against Lane and Lane’s pocket Jacks would hold up, giving him a dominating chip lead and placing Tehan out in ninth place.
Thiago Nishijima would go next, up against, you guessed it, Lane. Then Roberto Romanello would be eliminated. It would take another thirty minutes before another player, Alessandro Longonbardi would be out. Longobardi would take on Lane, not the smartest decision considering his track record during the final table play. Lane held A-K and Longobardi held A-J. With a ten high board, Longobardi would be eliminated.
Athanasios Polychronopoulos, Jonathan Lane and Antonio Esfandiari would be the next three to go, in that order, and this would leave Jeremiah Fitzpatrick and Craig McCorkell in heads up play.
When heads up play began, Fitzpatrick held the chip lead of about 3-1 but McCorkell would earn a few hands that would turn the chip lead in his favor. On the final hand, Fitzpatrick moved all in on the blind and McCorkell called. McCorkell held 8-5 and Fitzpatrick held 5-2. The flop fell 8-A-Q giving McCorkell the lead. The K on the turn and A on the river gave McCorkell the lead and Fitzpatrick would have to settle for second place.
