Remembering Popular Online WSOP Events in 2019

It’s July, and the 2020 World Series of Poker should have been underway big time right now, but it isn’t — at least not as we hoped. The coronavirus pandemic resulted in the WSOP postponement for fall this year, which means players will not travel to Rio Las Vegas to take part in the biggest poker festival in the world.

However, WSOP decided to give poker lovers an opportunity to experience the tournament online from the comfort of their homes.

The 2020 online WSOP events are expected to attract tens of thousands of players who would otherwise travel to Las Vegas. The first online event is scheduled to start on July 1. By the time you read this text, a winner might already be known.

To honor the online WSOP that takes place this year, we decided to recall three important events that took place last year as part of the online WSOP that ran at the same time as its land-based counterpart.

$400 ONLINE No-Limit Hold ’em

This event attracted a total of 1,965 players willing to pay the buy-in price of $400 to take part in it. Since re-entries were allowed, 860 players entered again, which means that the number of total registered entries was 2,825.

The first price belonged to Yong “LuckySpewy1” Kwon from the US, who managed to win a total of $165,263.

Yong faced Gabor “MeatisMurder” Szabo, who had to settle for the consolation prize of $99,361. Other players who took part in this event and reached the final table are Scott Eskenazi, Frederic Roetker, Phil Hellmuth, Phillip Raetz, Dan O’Brien, Steve Cicak, and Samuel Uhlmann.

$500 Online Deepstack

This event attracted a total of 1,767 players, and the one to celebrate in the end was Dan “centrefieldr” Lupo, who won a total of $145,273. Apart from that, he also won a gold bracelet, which is one of the biggest accolades in the world of poker.

Lupo faced David “DTC13” Clarke in the heads up and won, so Clarke earned $89,692 as a second-placed player.

Other players that were part of the final table were mostly unidentified and used their nicknames instead of real names.

$500 Online Summer Saver

The Online Summer Saver event required a $500 buy-in and attracted a total of 1,325 players, as well as 534 rebuys. The total prize pool for the event was $836,550, and the person who snatched the lion’s share of it was Taylor Paur, who uses the online nickname “Galactar.” He faced Francois “4everrekt” Evard, who lost in the heads-up and won $91,267.

Other players who made it to the final table are Satish Surapaneni, John Parker, Jason James, David Liebman, Joseph Hanrahan, Timothy Burtherford, and Brian Mancilla.

As you can see, WSOP was pretty popular last year on the web and attracted thousands of players. However, it will be interesting to compare events from 2020 WSOP Online to the three events described in this article.
