Boris Becker, a former partypoker and PokerStars ambassador, and a top tennis player will spend two and a half years in jail after a Southwark Crown Court found him guilty of contravening his bankruptcy’s terms.
The court found the former ambassador guilty of four charges of property removal, concealing debt, and two counts of not disclosing his assets according to his 2017 bankruptcy.
Judge Deborah Taylor sentenced Becker and said that it was notable he didn’t show remorse or appear to accept that he is guilty hence lacking humility. But she stated that Becker will serve half of his sentence in jail and the other half on license.
The Former Poker Ambassador’s Bankruptcy
Becker is a six-time Grand Slam champion, and he was announced to be bankrupt in June 2017 after he paid to repay a loan of about £4 million that he had taken on his Mallorca estate.
At that time, he informed the court that he earned about $50 million in his career. But, a costly divorce with Barbara Becker, his first wife, an expensive lifestyle, and child maintenance payments consumed most of his career earnings.
The court found Becker guilty of withdrawing thousands of pounds from his business account and not disclosing that he has a property in Leimen, Germany. Also, it convicted him of hiding 75,000 shares in a technology firm and an €825,000 bank loan.
His Poker Career
Becker stopped playing professional tennis in 1999 after winning six Grand Slam titles. Also, he worked as a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) commentator, Novak Djokovic’s coach, and an economic advisory board member for Bayern Munich for a decade.
PokerStars signed him as a Team PokerStars member in November 2007. partypoker later signed him in December 2016 when it had a big recruitment drive for professional players.
Becker informed PokerNews reporters in 017 that he cannot recall how life was without Wimbledon as he was a household name with many upsides. Generally, an individual excels at what they like doing, earn money, and get freedom. But, they can lose their freedom as they can no longer be anybody.
This comes with the territory, and someone cannot pity themselves. So, he did as he wished to achieve his goals. He participated in the Event No. 10 €111,111 high Roller for One Drop in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Europe, and didn’t win a cash prize.
The player cashed in seven poker events for a total of $111,416 in his live poker career, with $40,855 being his biggest score. He got it during the 2019 $25,500 World Poker Tour (WPT) Five Star World Poker Classic after finishing in 40th place.
Becker also cashed in the WPT Devilish Cup, Berlin Main Events, and European Poker Tour (EPT) Barcelona. His last cash-in was in 2016.
The former ambassador appeared again on professional poker’s radar in April 2020 during the Coronavirus pandemic. He uploaded a 30-second video clip on his Twitter account stating that he often plays online poker at GGPoker in partnership with Kings Casino. Becker hasn’t been active in poker of late as he was concentrating on his case.
