Carter Phillips Upsets Joe Cada with WSOP Event #31 Win

Event #31 of the WSOP has finished up and the winner of the $1,500 No Limit Hold’em event was Carter Philips. The event had 2,811 players competing and some of the best players registered for the event but would only last for a short time. Phillips was able to outlast the field of tough competitors to earn his second WSOP bracelet of his career.

Several top players would be eliminated during Day 1 play including: Viktor Blom, Greg Raymer, Kara Scott, Ana Marquez, David Williams, Matt Affleck and Andy Frankenberger. By Day 2 even more players would go down early including Bernard Lee, Nick Binger, Angel Guillen and more.

By Day 3, players had begun to talk about the event. Apparently Joe Cada was the chip leader after Day 2 and everyone felt as though he had a shot at winning the event. With only 19 players left in the event, it seemed likely.

With the win, Cada would be the first main event winner in the past ten years to earn a second bracelet. But apparently it was not to be. Cada slowly began to lose his stack once final table play began and in the end, Philips was able to defeat him in heads up play.

Heads up play would begin with Cada taking a small chip lead. However, he would lose the lead quickly after going all in early. The two players would go back and forth with the chip lead over a two hour period. In the end, Phillips would move all in with the chip lead and Cada would call.

Cada held 9-7 suited and Philips held Q-J on a board of 10-5-3-5-6. Philips cards held up and he would knock Cada out in second place, earning his second WSOP bracelet in the process.
