Now that daily fantasy sports legislation has been passed into law within the state of New York, operators are ready to get back in the action. It was announced just yesterday that five operators have been given temporary licensing to offer their services within the state until the New York State Gaming Commission can complete the regulations process.
The companies who are now able to offer daily fantasy sports in the state are:
- DraftKings
- FanDuel
- Yahoo
- FantasyDraft
- Draft
Each of the operators have been able to resume immediately with offering DFS contests. DraftKings was actually up and running within hours of the announcement. The operators had to submit the types of sports and contests they would be offering with DFS before the temporary license would be granted. Each operator also has to continue to go through the process involved in receiving full licensing, which will be a lengthy time frame.
DFS operators were happy to be back in business after the temporary licensing was granted. Jason Robins, the CEO of DraftKings, stated that the company is ‘thrilled’ to bring DraftKings back to millions of New York sports fans, as the MLB pennant races are heating up and the NFL season will soon be underway. Robins stated that DraftKings is proud to be a leading sports-tech and entertainment company that has the ability to deliver an unparalleled fantasy sports experience using state of the art technology.
Yahoo Sports and Finance Head of Product, Michael LaGuardia, commended state legislature as well as Governor Andrew Cuomo for enacting legislation that clarifies that legal status of daily offerings. LaGuardia pointed out that the new law supports a competitive marketplace as well as innovation and a more level playing field among users.
The New York State Gaming Commission continues to review applications for temporary permits within the DFS industry. As many as five other operators have submitted applications for approval.
